Bob's Story
Attended UC Berkeley 1979-1984. Took an Art History class for breadth requirements that changed the way I look at art and sculpture forever. Changed majors after discovering computers. Things have never been quite the same since. If I had realized that computing and software were my work path when I started in college I could have saved a lot of time. Worked and went to school concurrently. Ick.
Returned to the South Bay after college and have worked writing software (mostly operating systems, firmware and device drivers) in silicon valley ever since. Bounced around the valley over the years, working here and there. Had a great deal of fun, and learned many interesting things along the way. Did a brief stint as a software architect, which had me traveling to Ukraine regularly. Got numerous opportunities to refresh my German, learned some Ukrainian and Russian to help me get around. Had the best Wiener Schnitzel in the world when in Vienna one trip.
Currently working at Apple, where I do interesting things - very interesting things!
Still weird even after all these years.
Married in 1992, first child in 2000. Second child in 2004.
Currently cultivating sleep deprivation as a time management tool to permit me to get all the things done that I deem important. Odds are, I won't live long enough to get everything done but I'm doing the best I can. Some people have a bucket list for the things they want to do before they die. It looks to me l...Expand for more
ike I have a 55 gallon drum, because there are still so many things I want to do, learn or see before I give that barrel a kick. Learning more Japanese, getting the hang of Mandarin, polishing my current language skills and seeing all the interesting places I can find. I'd like to be literate in 20 languages before I die, and I'm still less than half-way. Yikes!
I still manage to read at least one book a week, although I wish I had time for more. Too much information... Must read faster.
I have discovered that my children are just a little too much like me for my own comfort. My oldest views every problem as an opportunity to build a robot to solve the problem, and his little brother is right in there as well, with tools in hand. Thank God I haven't taught them to arc weld yet!
Still writing, and playing games. Some day I really need to grow up. My wife puts up with me in spite of all this. See! Miracles do happen!
The dilettante bug has bitten me again. Had an idea for further enhancing geothermal power production while on vacation driving past San Onofre. Ack. More books ordered from Amazon on mechanical engineering. I wish it were a get rich quick scheme, but it looks more like a get crazy busy scheme. The money would be nice, but it's pretty complex. Mostly because of government regulation. I guess most people aren't comfortable setting up a power generation plant in their backyard. My kids want to build robots to to the heavy work.
