Annual summer commuting on motorcycle to "split lanes" (loved that about California) cutting travel time. 1982 Sold everything and moved family (four kids) to Oregon in search of new career The start of multiple business partnerships with Karol Spent every dollar we had buying a Chevron Service Station in Eugene Renting a home for 6 months while we opened and closed the station to purchase our second house, a few months later, in Eugene's upper-end neighborhood paying it off in seven years while totally remodeling, adding to it and building architecturally matching garage, carport with guest suite above. 1983 ASE Mechanic / Auto and Motorcycle, Hot Hogs by Bob Nothing like the thump of a Harley, but the handling of BMW stellar 1984 Chevron Station Remodeled w/30,000 tank capacity (200k+ gallons monthly) 1985 Bob's Chevron Towing / Full Service Auto Center Private Pilot License, Instrument Rated, Multi-Engine Rated 1986 Mazziotti Water Skiing School / MasterCraft Pro 190 Dealer 1987 Commercial Pilot License / owner- operator Cessna 182 STOL N9770G A&P License (rebuilt motor and performed my own annuals and maintenance) 1988 Purolator Air Freight (subcontracted with my Cessna EUG-PDX daily at 4 PM) 1989 We flew up and down the Pacific Coast and Idaho visiting friends and family, taking the kids to Disneyland for the weekend, over Cascades, Sierra Nevadas and Coast Range to SoCal, frequent trips over the Oregon Coast, down to Santa Paula and Bel Aqua Lake in Rio Linda. To me it was like riding a motorcycle in an aquarium, you could go any direction you wanted even upside-down. Better than motocross, Laguna Seca or even dirt bike riding in the Ventura River bed with Steve McQueen (400's - Steve’s Husqvarna and my Suzuki). Memories of hanging with him at his Santa Paula Airport hanger trading stories. 1990 Again we sold our home and bought 8 wooded acres outside Eugene, where Karol and I with our kids, clear cut a couple acres, leaving the rest in Timber Deferral, and built our third house with "Toy Shop". We rented a friend's house while he (a Horizon Airline Pilot, bachelor, and the guy that introduced me to flying) slept in his airplane hanger at Daniels Field Airport. Couldn't have done it without friends like him! The kids remember that period with beans and rice for dinner, school supplies for Christmas and working, hard labor every weekend, life’s lessons taught first hand 1991 RV Connection (land development, construction, sales & service) LP-Gas, CNG & LNG License, Certified Welder 1992 Mazziotti 4x4 Van Conversions 1993 Mazziotti Customs (Trucks and Motorcycles, multiple builds) 1994 QuickMix Concrete owners/operators - volumetric proportioning mobile built on Peterbilt chassis. Complete operations facility with loading equipment, storage building and supply yard. Karol dispatched from home, ordered supplies and kept books, while I delivered and maintained truck, equipment and yard, this venture was the most demanding. Up at 3AM home at 8PM 6 days a week sometimes 7 for maintenance 1995 CDL License (yep, drove and operated my Peterbuilt before getting CDL Class A license) 1996 Sold Quick Mix with equipment, supplies and property. Built a second shop (home business facility) on our 8 acres 300 ft from our house for Cascade Vault Company (from startup - facility, manufacturing, sales and delivery) covering the entire West Coast Family venture with Karol and our oldest son Luke. Y2K the world was locking up everything, anticipating the end, business boomed. Back surgery that year unable to feel me legs with severe back pain resulting in complete laminectomy on 2,3,4 and 5. 1997 US Patent # US5709051A (Patenting, manufacturing, marketing, distribution and sales) The drain lines, from the rain gutters to the dry wells on our acreage, filled with pine needles and plugged, so I came up with the fix, Gutter Great™. Worked so well I patented it and had a mold made in Taiwan. Then set up manufacturing landing first big order of 200 units in every Home Depot store nationwide, close to 2000 stores. Followed with Familian and Ferguson Pumbing Supply then Gutter World, sales skyrocketed. Now sold as Flex-grate on Amazon and Home Depot etc. 1998 Our marketing success lead to the patent and product sale to Amerimax. That allowed us to have our new Deep-V Explorer boat built in Bellingham WA. SeaSport 2400 turbo intercooled diesel w/ dual prop live aboard cruiser (heavy, deep-v hull,...Expand for more
top of the line ocean boat). Home Port B'ham - Squalicum Harbor (this period in our lives, Karol and l, was one of our favorites, one on one Island time. 1999 USCG OUPV/Six-Pack Captain License 2002 Sold Cascade Vault Co. Having always owning and modifying Jeeps since we got married, from Conejo Off Road days (Newbury Park) to JT Jeeps on the Oregon Dunes, brought the next venture - Tentrax Off Road Trailers (from original design to manufacturing facility in our home business shop), while driving advertising and marketing, sales expanded into Worldwide distribution. Turned hobby of building Jeeps with triangulated suspension, off-road adventure and camping into income. Bought a Canon D5, learned Illustrator 7 and Photoshop and built my own ads for multiple magazines. Loving what you do is the simplest way to success, plus the Tentrax years only required us to work a couple days a week at the most, just the two of us. It was an enjoyable slowdown into retirement with more profit/income than any previous ventures. 2004 Tentrax was featured in Daimler Chrysler's Jeep Wrangler Brochure and multiple displays at SEMA Off-Road in Las Vegas and Moab Jeep Safari ... so that year Karol and I decided to sell out and end our career world. We were done with “people”. 2006 Well into retirement in the Pacific Northwest, corner of Washington State, where we vaca'd every summer Island hopping between the United States and Canada, now it's our backyard. 20** La Vita Dolce with Karol "the one" for 56 years ... and counting! And yes I have enjoyed a few builds for "the love of it" in our 20 years of retirement... "Covid Build" : bringatrailer 1966-chevrolet-c10-pickup-27 2009 Bilateral knee replacement (wouldn't recommend having them both at the same time, difficult recovering from having both legs cut off) 2016 Both hips replaced, one after the other 2019 Right shoulder 2022 Double Rentina detachment, with atrophied left eye optic nerve, vision loss, but still have one good eye and an original working left shoulder. Wind sprints are out...but if I fall I can still get up. No need for the life alert button, yet. The physical results of the road here were not foreseen , even if it had been I'd do it all again! Now with Karol's "honey-do" and my irresistible urge to "build something" my days are full and still have dreams to bring to fruition. Projects seem to turn out even better as I am much slower achieving perfection, leaving my OCD more satisfied with the results. I hate it when someone tells me "nothings perfect". I disagree! Thoughts - Any one of my acquired licenses would have been career for most, and taken years of formal education. I did attend Moorpark College for an AA in Administration of Justice while Karol was taking prerequisite classes for the registered nursing program at Ventura College. But with our family growing and the starting wage of a Police Officer in Oxnard being $800 (plus having to pay for your own uniform), I decided that was a "NO". I began driving nails swinging a 28oz and honestly loved it the most! Shirtless wearing just PE shorts, boots and a nail bag, having Rock'n Roll blasting through the truck's (doors open) stereo. CCR and Val Halen set the pace, the more I sweat the more money I made. I could not work at the slow pace of the hourly worker, under supervision, listening to Country Music. Don't get me wrong, there is really great country... Jennifer Nettles- Sugarland especially with Bon Jovi. Piece working was my path, the same rush you got when you sacked the quarterback. A high school graduate being self-taught through love, desire and commitment with hard work and support of my BFF, partner and wife served my imagination and dreams came true. Life itself was our school, without outside help we built each venture from nothing and worked toward the success of everyone. It was like forcing a square peg in a round hole, and ( in my case) having someone tell you you can't do it, or " you know nothing about it", proving them wrong. As a matter of fact, my first banker told me I was making a big mistake when we, Karol, I and four kids (girl, boy, girl, boy), sold everything including our house in Ventura (in Matt Hickle's old neighborhood off Main St in Ventura ) and moved to Oregon without a plan. Karol and three of our kids stayed with my Grandmother in Northern California while our oldest son and I took of in my pickup in search, sleeping in the truck for weeks at a time. Turned out to be the best decision, teaching and enabling us to put it "all on the line" many times throughout our lives, together. Takes effort but it can be done, just grease it with love and believe in yourself. Epilogue - Could not have done any of it without my "Mascot" by my side everyday, every second - grateful and very fortunate to have crossed paths long ago. She brings "luck" still today. The Love of My Life Our life today - Where we call home most people have never visited or know even exists. Commerce slows north of Seattle with the only way back being backtrack south. We live 2 hours north of Seattle, and only 10 minutes from the Canadian Boarder. The PNW offers everything our world has to offer at its best - Ocean, mountains, rivers and lakes with seclusion, beauty and seasons. We continue to orchestrate our lives enjoying each day with our Labrador, "Shades" in the tranquility and privacy of Karol's manicured gardens and park like forested property that she has created over the last 20 years. Hard to think we're old enough, that we have lived here longer than we will be here, time flies! E-biking throughout Whatcom County or floating within the Islands waters for the catch of the day, while squeezing in a few isolation getaways in our AWD BAJA Transit by Mazziotti Customs. We awake eager for chores each morning and end falling asleep satisfied and grateful, lying next to one another each night. Couldn't ask for more! History - Great Grandparents Carmelo "Carl" and Leoluchina "Lu-lu" Mazziotti emigrated from Palermo, Sicily, Italy in the 1890's through El- lis Island ... 'til the dirt nap - one life, no do overs... grateful!
