Bob's Story

Hi :) Since leaving Wahlert I married the girl of my dreams, the former Kathy Jo Hodges (Senior High, class of '69), who blessed us both with three wonderful sons, Bobby, Scott and Todd. In 1974 we settled in the Jacksonville, FL area, where Kath and the kids resided, through October of 2011, while I was often deployed down range/overseas, and training with friendly foreign military services throughout the world; a truly eye-opening, educational, exciting and humbling experience all around. Following graduation (Summa cum laud, Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of North Florida in 1985, Kathy began a career as an elementary school teacher that spanned 20 years. Upon completing her MS degree in Library Science Kathy worked as a librarian for another five years, passing away in October 2011 following a courageous battle with cancer. I entered the US Navy in 1971, earning my bachelors degree (Southern Illinois Univ, Summa cum laud) in 1979, and my masters degree in 1995 (Webster University, summa cum laud). Throughout two plus decades of service I had the privilege of serving with some of the world’s best special operators, serving as both an anti submarine warfare intelligence collection aircrewman (VP-56, VP-30, VS-24) and certified search and rescue (SAR) swimmer/instructor; (HS-9, HSW 1). Additional service in various commands included CSFW Atlantic, and the Pentagon. While at the latter, I served as the senior briefing officer for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Crowe, and twice had the privilege of briefing in person the President of the United States. During one particular assignment (HS-1, NAS Jax, FL, 1985-‘88) I was honored to serve under two hats as the US Navy’s (east coast) Search and Rescue (SAR) Training officer, and Aircrew Rescue Swimmer Training Officer. During Desert Storm I assisted HCS-9 with their pre-deployment Combat SAR preparations and training. Upon graduation and commissioning as an officer (AOCS Class 2179, Pensacola, FL) I attended the US Navy Intelligence Officer Training School in Denver, CO. Upon graduation I began service as an Operational (air, sea and land) Intelligence Officer, collecting hard intelligence on our nations adversaries, and using information gained to assist “operators” in planning for possible combat missions in the event of hostilities. Additional assignments and duties are as presented in the previous/above paragraph. Throughout my USN career (9 overseas deployments of 6 mos or more, and countless joint training assignments with allied forces), if there were tasks, assignments and missions I completed successfully, it was due (first and foremost to the selfless support of my late wife and best friend, Kathy) to the amazing leadership of those senior officers I worked for, and the professional skill and acumen of the teams of officers, enlisted personnel and civilians with whom I was humbled to be associated. It was a combination of their ever obvious dedication, decision making skills, bravery, courage (the latter two being related, but not essentially the same) and profess...Expand for more
ionalism that allowed me to achieve anything. To me, there is no bond of friendship stronger than that which is forged from sharing danger together with one’s teammates, whether while training or in a hostile environment. I miss them now, and always will. May God bless them all. Our eldest son, Bobby, is married and living in the Washington DC area. He and his wife Christine have given us two beautiful grandsons, Colin, 18, and Liam, 13. Bobby, the GS equivalent of a military 1 Star general, serves as the Special Agent-in-Charge of a DHS task force commissioned to bring down illegal alien gangs and Islamic terrorists operating in the US. Bobby received his BS degree from the University of Florida in 1994, and his masters degree from the US Air Force Air War College in 2009. Scott, our middle son, graduated from the University of Florida in 1998 with a BS in electrical engineering, and earned his masters degree from the USAF Air War College in 2009. He is a USAF Colonel and fighter pilot (F-16s and F-15s), as well as a US Customs and Border Protection special agent/pilot. He currently serves as the Chief of Staff assigned to a classified air warfare command in Washington, D. C. Scott, his wife Miki, and their daughters, (our "Princesses"), EMI and Reina, now reside in the D.C. area. Our youngest son, Todd, graduated from Florida State University in 2004. He is a Registered Nurse living in northern California, where he works as an ER nurse. Todd was married in October of 2015, and he and his wife, Tiffany, also an ER RN, reside in Sonoma County, CA. On October 7th, 2018 Tiffany gave birth to “Finn,” Lourdes’ (below) and my 8th grandchild (now 6 via moi, and three via Luly); and this past August to Max, our 9th! God is good. Following Kathy's passing I had been traveling this beautiful country of ours, mountain hiking and camping, winter and summer, (much with my son Todd) in the more remote back country areas of national parks located throughout the contiguous 48; and sky diving and scuba diving with two old friends, retired USN SEALS from Team Two, Dam Neck, VA. I would proffer that moose, elk, bear, coyote and mountain lion are not on any endangered species list, nor are many species of shark :) In May of 2013 I met a beautiful woman, Lourdes (Luly) Laurent, and once again fell in love. On June 21st (2014) we were married in St. Mary Catholic Church, East Dubuque, and thoroughly enjoyed living on Frentress Lake through June of 2018 and, come late January, doing the snow bird thing at our home in FL…and indulging our love of recreating in the Florida Keys and Grand Cayman. I'm a truly blessed man, as Luly fell in love with Dubuque, and we had the added blessing of many wonderful friends, family and neighbors. BUT, both being the adventurous type, Luly and I have moved to Flagstaff, AZ. It’s here, and from here that we can pursue our love of mountain hiking, western sightseeing, and traveling the world. God is good :) My sincerest wish is that you, my fellow/former classmates are happy, healthy, and doing well. God bless, Bobby
