Bob's Story

School: I left Sharpsburg in 1960 when we moved to Shaler. College I took a few classes at Robert Morris. Military: I joined the US Air Force in the fall after graduation from Shaler High School. I picked up some Air Force Institute classes. I was trained at Chanute AFB Ill. and was stationed in Rome N.Y. Strategic Air Command. I didn't like the cold weather up there and put in for a transfer to a warmer climate. They sent me to Vietnam for two years. 1965-1967. Workplace: When I got back from Vietnam my cousin who worked as a Special Agent for the FBI told me the Bureau was interested in recruiting new Special Agents and with my military background, I was what they were looking for. I took the exam and passed. In 1967 I entered Agents training in Washington DC. During training I worked in the Crime Records Division, and one of my jobs was to pick replacements on the Top Ten Fugitives program. I met my wife PJ in the Justice Department building. She would bring me files for review. In the early 1970s two of our friends were killed, that was a little too close to home and my pregnant wife forced me to resign from the Bureau. I took a sales position with a packaging company back here in Pittsburgh. In the later 1970's after we had moved back to Pittsburgh, I was contacted by KDKA TV. They were looking for a body to film at various Pittsburgh restaurants; (someone mysterious), and I interviewed for the job. Out of 600 men they narrowed it down to three and each of us filmed a restaurant; when the smoke cleared, I became Evening Magazines Phantom Diner. Mike Kolina was the critic and the voice; but I was the body in the trench coat, sunglasses, and fedora. I got to meet a lot of celebrities I never would have met and ate a lot of things I never would have ordered! One of the shoots was filmed at Pepis Restaurant on th...Expand for more
e North Side; and Franco Harris was part owner. We filmed him eating lunch with me, and after the shoot was finished, we were signing autographs for a load of kids who had gathered. KDKA had some 3 X 5 photo cards made up for me to sign and Franco was signing everything from T-shirts to toilet paper. After the producer said OK everyone out, and the crowd dispersed; Franco looked at my photo cards and said Can I have one for my son? ----- Wait a minute; Franco Harris just asked ME for MY autograph! Made my day!!! That was a part time fun thing once a week and certainly did not feed the rest of my family for the rest of the week! My full-time job was packaging engineering. In 1985 I started my own business (R.B. Jones Corporation). We did well and had a lot of fun! Life: A lot has happened since 1963! God has been good to me. I'm still married (54 years in 2022) to that red-headed gal from Indiana that I met while we were working for the FBI, she blessed us with two children, and they with five grandchildren. We liked to travel and have been to 14 countries, Bora Bora in the Pacific, 12 trips to Hawaii, and several visits to the Caribbean. I was elected Mayor of Ben Avon, Pa. and served for 8 years. So, after spending over 24 years serving my government, and 35 years building a business we retired and now just enjoy life with occasional trips. It would be nice to see you all again and reminisce about the most memorable times of our lives. The best music, the best cars, the prettiest people, the experiences, and the good times! We grew up in a wonderful age,. It is so unfortunate the teens of today will never experience the wonderful age we grew up in! I hope this finds you healthy, and happy! If anyone is planning a reunion from Sharpsburg or Shaler please let me know, I would love to see you all again. Bob Jones
