Bob's Story
Post HHS, went to New Mexico Tech 'cause they had the only Computer Science degree program in the state. After working as a student coop for 2.5 years at Rockwell International in El Segundo, I graduated in '76.
My primary work focus was managing computing systems. I did stints as systems programmer and Director at Tech's computer center.
I was able to get on the ARPANET starting at Tymshare in 1979, where I was manager of systems running TENEX and Augment (known as NLS at SRI International) which was Douglas Englebart's creation. You may have used one of his inventions: the computer mouse. See wikipedia for a look at his visionary career.
I then became manager of Stanford's educational computing facility, LOTS. See "Hackers in Paradise" (Rolling Stone issue no. 367, Google is your friend to find it) for an article on LOTS. In 1982, I was in Oslo sitting at a ARPANET terminal and logged into my systems at Stanford. I thought "This [network] is going to change the world." It has. I also was manager of the Network Information Center computing facility, the only host dual-homed to ARPANET and MilNet, at SRI International.
For an interesting history of networking from the 60's to 1988, see "Circuits, Packets and Protocols" by Pelkey, et. al. It is not cheap nor is it an easy read, but it is rewarding. From my experience, I can say it's mostly accurate, pieced together 30+ years later by the authors..
I had the good fortune of working with pioneers in Internet technology in California, three of whom are in the Internet Hall of Fame, but New Mexico was always in my heart. I co-founded a company...Expand for more
that did oil and gas automation. Rode that marble for over 10 years before it finally ran out of gas. I programmed and did operations management at a couple of Los Alamos companies, but then LANL came calling.
I was lucky to work there for 15 years, managing high-performing teams. I retired as a Group Leader in the Network Infrastructure Engineering Division. If you had a desktop, laptop or server that wasn't a supercomputer, my group touched it , remotely, in one way or another.
While at Los Alamos, I co-founded La Canada Wireless Association (a non-profit user-owned cooperative) in 2002 with the intent to provide high-speed internet access to under-served rural areas. Initially Eldorado at Santa Fe was the target population, but it has grown to over 800 households serving Telephone Road SW of Madrid, Lamy, Cerrillos, La Cienega, Canada de Los Alamos , Canoncito, Galisteo, Eldorado and Santa Fe proper. I intended it to be all-volunteer, but that fell by the wayside in 2010. I ceased my participation when that happened. Unfortunately, it is no longer price-competitive for those of us with other options.
I am married to Joanne since 1999. I have one son, lives in the PNW. Joanne has three daughters and one son, with eight grandchildren. The kids live in Alabama, Texas, Arizona and NM.
We are lucky to be retired in Santa Fe and enjoy skiing, fly fishing, RV travel and life in general. My personal interests are in computing (programming, cybersecurity, networking, open source systems administration, etc), music, high-end stereo systems, reading and general maintenance of our house and RV.
