Bonita's Story

Life I enlisted in the Navy after H.S. Worked as a Hospital Corp Wave. Met and married my husband when stationed in San Diego. Married since 1970. we had 1 daughter and 2 boys. Husband worked long 12 hr days which left me the all important job of bringing up the kids. Helped the two boys get through Boys Scouts as a Volunteer in the organization since about 1983. One made the rank of Life Scout the other became an Eagle Scout. I am still involved as a Volunteer having risen to and worked as the District Commissioner s 2003- 2014 in VT. I seem to made a career out of a Volunteer Organization but love it's d values and how it helps boys develop into good young men with good values and skills to carry them through life. Life has taken me to many places since leaving Cincinnati. My husband served 8 years which took us overseas to live in Italy for a few years. We were able to travel some to a couple other countries from there. Living abroad is an experience every young person should take advantage of if they get the opportunity. Seeing cultural differences helps put our country in a whole new light. I have lived many places across the USA as well and have friends in many places. Our kids are all grown up with lives of their own. They are spread around New England. The oldest lives in MA is now divorced and not in good health, the next one never married - Is living in NY with his job taking him all over New England, the youngest married and settled in VT.. The next generation is now lurking in the shadows to embark on the journey of life. 5 grand children in all. with finally a Grandson. to carry on the family name. I have never been athletic but made the comment to my husband in 2007 that when he retired I would need to learn how to golf since that is where he disappeared to the rest of that summer after our youngest son got married when he was off work. My foot in mouth disease got me into trouble with that comment. Middle of the next winter when the Club membership came due my husband asked if I was going to golf with him the next summer. In spite of my crooked walk from an injury where I tore something in my left knee 15years before and was now wearing a heavy duty brace on the knee I gulped and said okay. That first summer was quite the experience but I had a good attitude and the bug hit. The next winter the knee got replaced and I went back out to golf with even more passion. Hubby had a lot of fun watching my antics as I tried my best to hit that tiniest of balls in the largest of landscapes in the years since then. Claimed even as his health could take him out of the game he will be my caddy! I am in trouble, since I do have a mind of my own and it sometimes clashes with what he tries to tell me. We went through many tough times and learning curves and still stayed together. He took early retirement for health issues. Retirement has brought other things into play. Those so called "Golden Years" are not so gold. Glad we did so much traveling when younger because now we have health issues coming at us and you find the gold went to kids schooling etc over the years so living on an fixed income which is half what someone used to be able to earn is getting challenging. Social Security keeps threatening to reduce that even more. Perhaps if those who made those decisions lived at our level they might understand better the challenges to surviving the "not so gold years". In fall of 2015 We sold our home in VT and moved to S.C. in the upstate region. We golfed and enjoyed the last years.. I figured out in 2020 that he had inherited Alzhiemer's and it was now showing in many ways. Then in Jan 2021 he fell ill with Covid. I got it a little over a week later from him. I had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital on my worse day. I got better. He worked hard to do so but in the end could not. My heart broke through the whole journey. I was fortunate to be able to visit him twice a day once we reached the 21rst day after out positiv...Expand for more
e tests. and was able to see him pass. Our 50th Anniversary in 2020 came as everything closed down for Covid. He was so proud of that mile stone. we were 28 days short of our 51rst Anniversary. when he passed. No One can prepare you for the loss of your soul mate. It has turned my world upside down. But I keep plodding along. I as a veteran too, I am the Adjutant for my American Legion Post since 2017. Several of the veterans have been very supportive and helpful .I joke I get to agitate the guys. I seem to be loved by them with none wanting to loose me. Think that was voiced to my kids when they came for a "Celebration of Life" for their Dad. . Life has changed in the past 14 months. I have always been a trooper and maybe in denial of some things? I have learned to do more things that I left to my husband. Mowing last summer on a ride around was interesting to say the least. Towed that mower out of a few stuck places. No problem. A couple other things I did I needed help with. LOL This year I am dodging "Sailors Holes"!!! Answers to some Questions: The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my father, because he died too soon for me to get to know him better. I joked that If my husband died before me, .he would be replaced by a dog. A dog did come into my life 4 mos. later. Named him Sailor. The dog is bigger than I wanted but the size Jeffrey, would have wanted. The name floated into my head when it was clear. and not thinking of one in a way that it had to be Jeffrey? This dog is trouble. Digs enough holes to china someone could get hurt. How is it you can try to fill those holes up and not have the amount of dirt that one filled them to go back in? I will need to find extra dirt somewhere so I don't loose the lawnmower in one. Sailor, is part hound and a mix of something more excitable. I really need to re-home him at this point because he is really too much dog for me with my own health issues. He really did take away the loneliness of being a widow some. He is 1 year now. Understands some commands. Needs more work on that. Smart. Has figured out many things along the way. Would love to play with someone who can toss a ball or something or even have a dog to play with. I parented instead of being a friend to my kids as they grew up. They respected me more for that and are now there for me if I need them. I tried to teach them honesty and integrity and they seem to have risen to those values.. My best friend would tell you I'm dependable, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as independent and tough. I am semi talented in many crafty areas but master of none. I will surprise friends with the cakes I made. Hubby was always first in line to sample or forever complained he never gets enough. LOL He had the honor of carrying one of my creations into an event. Comes with a double edged sword though! He better not drop it or he is at fault! LOL have resisted from making any since moving south. Neither of us needed that many calories and people here did not know I had that skill. July 2022 Where has time gone? Sailor has now been re-homed to a good couple who have trained greyhounds and other bigger dogs. He took them easily and is loved. Good news is I didn't loose him. Just graduated him to another place to learn more with more space to run when he learns his boundaries and I am invited to visit anytime. Miss my husband every day but have evolved to a new normal without him. The American Legion Post keeps me busy. This summer I got hit by a baseball at one of the games. The guys warned me ever since when a baseball came my direction. Looks like this year I was a baseball magnet and they like a band of brothers are ready to a=wrap me up in bubble wrap or a big bubble to roll me down to the field. We supported a Jr And a Sr Baseball team and a Girls Softball team. All under the legion here in S.C. Look for the girls to become a national thing, They were so much fun to watch.
