Bonnie's Story

Since High School I have been very busy. I graduated from Brockport University in 1978. In my last year, I was asked to teach a Speech course as if I were a graduate assn't. I received a full scholarship to Syracuse University and graduated with my Masters in 1980. I began my career at ASCAP as an account rep. I was very restless and really wanted to do something more interesting and a little physical. I quit a high paying position at ASCAP to work at Jack LaLanne. I really like selling health and fitness and rose through the ranks quickly. I became a supervisor in record time and taught an aerobics class just at the time of Jane Fonda. I won many awards for sales and loved the exercise. Soon after, I owned my own aerobics studio in Bellmore called "STEPS". I then took it a step further and competed in a bodybuilding competition in which I won best poser and third place. Although It was a great experience, It was something I would not like to do again. I later went into teaching. In my first experience, I was put into a special education class. I really liked It and found I had the patience and creativity to be successful. I got married in June 1989 and we bought a house in Merrick (where I still live). I had my son Jesse in March 1990. I returned to college the next year to get certified in Special Education. My husband Anthony became sick in May 1993. He died in July after a short battle with brain cancer. I was alone with my 3 year old. I made an apartment in my basement and began making children's clothing to sell at the Roosevelt raceway. I did this because It was a way to make more money then I made as a teacher to keep my home. Don't ask me how I knew how to do that. It just came to me. I remember tie-dying clothing in my washing machine late at night so I could spend the days with my son. I did that until the raceway closed. I was not prepared for that and was at a crossroad. I returned to teaching and taking care of my son. I eventually met my second husband at AA. Oh I forgot that part. I joined AA in 1982. I was a big partier in College and It got me into trouble. Soon-af...Expand for more
ter I graduated from college I got sober. I am now sober for over 25 years. I had another son Logan in 1997 with my second husband. I was very unhappy in my this marriage because I had never really grieved for my first husband. I was so busy with my son and working so hard to keep my home that I put it way way way in the back of my head. He was also 10 years younger than me very immature and not ambitious in the work dept. I finally asked him to leave in April 2006 after 10 very long years. I am still in the process of getting divorced. I began working in Early Intervention 13 years ago. Currently, I do ABA therapy (Applied Behavorial analysis) with 2-3 year old autistic babies. When they turn 3 my time with them is over. It is very hard to say good-bye because the therapy is usually 2 hours a day 5 days a week in the childs home. In January I will start my BCBA online. It is made up of 5 courses online along with the ABA therapy I do now in the field. My son Jesse is now 18 and a Freshman at Oswego State College. My younger son Logan is 11 and goes to Lakeside School. I said in my very long "Story" that I currently live in Merrick on Montauk Avenue. I am writing a book about one of the children I have finished working with that was decertified. That means that they were considered to not be autistic after their Early Intervention therapy was over. This has occured with the last 3 children I have worked with and I am now keeping a diary with all of the children I am seeing currently. I will choose one as a case study. My hope for the future is to also find someone that I can grow old with. I feel that I have done the work to become open to a loving relationship with a man. I also want to become more active again and lose the "when am I ever going to be divorced and not be tortured anymore" pounds I have gained this year. After all we are all now over 50 and need to be more concerned with our health. I look forward to connecting with some of my old friends from High School. Please feel free to write. I will post a picture as soon as possible. I'll never forget the Qualude parties
