Booker's Story

After graduating from East Side high, I knocked around odd jobs for a few years in the Metro-East area. Then I made the life-changing decision in 1974 to go to college at Illinois State University in Normal, IL. Graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor Degree specializing in Housing and Applied Design. But instead of pursuing my career in the design field, I immediately went to grad school at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL and received my Master's Degree in College Student Personnel Work in 1980. onal in Higher Education, working in the field of Activities Planning and Administration. Moved to Chicago in 1984, and worked for the National Association for College Admissions Counselors where I was a Coordinator for National College Fairs. I began working at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988, where I spent the great majority of my career work. After a very rewarding 30 year career in higher education I retired in 2017. Met my future wife and life partner Verne Adams at ISU, and we married in 1979. We have a son, a daughter and a grandson.
