Brenda's Story

I went to Guthrie Elementary School from first to eighth grades. My best friends there were Carolyn Bland, Katherine Price, Linda Carter and Mary Clemmer. I was very quiet and shy in elementary school. Well, most of my school years, except to my closest friends who knew me to be funny and crazy. I always liked having a good time! I spent my sophomore year at Argo High School in Summit, Illinois, after my daddy got transfered there. My best friend was Myrna Maureen Morris. She was short like me, a little shorter even, and we hit it off first thing. I had a lot of friends there who I still have fond memories of. I was in the Accapella Choir with Mr. Moritz and we put on the play 'South Pacific'. I played 'Liat', 'Bloody Mary's' daughter. I had a lot of fun that year. Hayrides and going sledding-- even if I did get frostbite which still affects me to this day!:( But the people were great. A photo of me as 'Liat' made Jimmy Latham meet me at the train station when I came back for a visit the summer of 1963---and ended up staying! We had a great time that summer and through the next:) I graduated in 1965 from Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee. My best friend after graduation was Linda Hall who also graduated from Humes in 1965. We had a lot of fun together in 1965. Linda passed away in 2000 from cancer, but I'll always remember her as a really sweet person with a heart of gold. In 1966 I married the love of my life, Jimmy Latham, and we've been together ever since, though it has been a bumpy ride from time to time! We have two children, a son and daughter. Our son is on his third marriage and has one son who is 24 and in college studying criminal justice, but he is also working at UPS and is a supervisor there. Our daughter has been married twice and is twice divorced and has three daughters, ages 19, 16 and 3 years.! Jimmy served in the Army in Vietnam and received a shrapnel wound in his shoulder. He received a Purple Heart. I found out...Expand for more
I was pregnant right before he went over. He got to come home about a month or so before our son was born. I was so glad even if he did have to get wounded to make it back. At least he came back, like so many didn't. We were lucky and still are. Jimmy and I are retired now. He owned his own a/c, heating and electrical business for 30+ years and I was his office. Jimmy spends most of his time working in the yard during nice weather and he's taken up painting in his 'old age' and is quite good:) He makes model cars and dioramas also. And collects music like mad! He's active with the Vietnam Veterans Society. I was an art major in high school and have been dabbling in anything artsy ever since. I love writing short stories, poetry, and maybe some day a novel, crocheting, drawing, sculpting, reading, jewelry making. I hope one day to get my own website for my jewelry making. In 2004 Jim and I bought a house with five wooded acres and remodeled and added onto it and still aren't finished. I love decorating and I painted the entire interior and part of the exterior and together we laid the ceramic tile floors. I added Venetian plaster and gold, silver and copper leaf through the house. I am in the process of making a ceiling drape for the high ceiling in our great room and some curtains and covering a couple chairs. Wish me luck! Jim did the electrical and a/c and heating for the house. It's been a lot of work, but we have a home that is uniquely ours. Our little piece of heaven on earth:) It's so nice to have a quiet peaceful neighborhood instead of all the noise and congestion in Memphis! We don't miss it at all!!! I'm not quiet like I was in school anymore. Getting quite vocal in my old age:) Surprise, surprise! And I'm no longer a brunette like I've been most of my life. I'm now a redhead with strawberry blonde highlights and I love it! I got tired of all my gray showing! I'd love to hear from old friends, so feel free to write me!
