Brenda Ledbetter:

CLASS OF 1978
Detroit, MI

Brenda's Story

Life After graduating from Benedictine HS in 1978, I went on to attend MSU to study psychology. As both my other siblings were in college at the same time as I, my parents agreed to sponser/pay for the first two years of education for all three of us. The remaining two years was on us. I took a job as a courier at the Lansing Journal and worked my way thru the 3rd year. When summer came, I returned home to Detroit and landed a job as the Detroit Dock Manager at the now defunct Boblo Island. I oversaw the dock and boat operations for the daily travels to and from the Island, and also oversaw the Moonlight Cruises each weekend. In responding to a blind ad in the Free Press late that summer, I interviewed and was hired as an auto claims assistant with State Farm Insurance. The starting salary was so lucrative, I decided to forego returning to MSU in the fall and winter, with plans to return for the spring semester to finish my senior year. Some 20+ years later, I continued to work and advance at State Farm, and never returned to complete my college education. I married in 1991 and had my only child-a daughter (Micah) in 1996. ed for 8 years, and divorced in 2001. The day I finalized my divorce, I enrolled in Davenport University to complete my degree. In May 2005 I graduated with high honors with a BS in Business Mgt. Although it took me 20+ years, a marriage and the birth of child inbetween, I finally managed to secure that elusive college degree that I had began years ago. Currently, I am a single mother raising my 11 year old daughter solo. I continue to be employed as an insurance professional, but since securing my degree, have stepped out on faith and out of my comfort zone to demand an increase in my salary. I left State Farm after a 20+ year career, worked at Citizens Insurance for 3 years, and am now employed as a Master Claims Specialists with Nationwide Insurance. My specialty is handling catastrophic injury claims due to auto accidents, i.e., paraplegics, brain injured, etc. My daughter is beautiful and the best accomplishment of my life. She is pretty, smart, and an avid dancer. She is my constant motivation! I look forward to meeting my soulmate and possibly remarrying sometime down the line, but for now, I'm content raising and enjoying singledome.
