Brenda's Story
Life
Hi all. I didn't graduate from Calumet, only through 10th grade. I was going through "stuff" a few days ago (my husband is always bugging me to throw things away because he is "tired of moving it, from house to house") and started looking through a yearbook. It seems like just last week I was rushing to Accapella class in Mrs. Langston's room in the "new gym". That poor woman is probably going to go straight to heaven when she dies because of all the hell we put her through--and she did't even try to kill one of us. I recall the look of total frustration on her face each day as her control of the class slowly slipped away from her, and our teenageriness overwhelmed our sense of right and wrong--and fear of detention. Mrs. Langston had her justice though, when we went to the area conference we were so sad, figuratively, in comparison to the other schools. Mrs. Langston was aware of how embarrassed we all were. And we knew that she knew by the parental smile on her face similar to the ones in the audience. Instant Karma. (My family still laughs about that when I talk about being in choir--my singing is still just slightly off key ha-ha-ha). And being so excited every time there was a dance in the gym and waiting breathlessly for Rick or Stu to ask me to dance. God I was such a geek! And so painfully shy. But in all honesty, that is probably where I got the drive to continue in school as long as I did. I think I just had an epipheny--hum...
As for my life, it has been fairly mainstream. I live in Windermere, FL. In my second marriage now. We have been together since '91. Then just five short years later (I kept asking my husband "Dan" or "Spence" to his friends, what the rush was all about) Dan drug me to a little white chapel in Las Vegas and we had a bit of a shotgun thing going on--no he wasn't pregnant--something about me causing him ...Expand for more
to live in sin and his family telling him he was going to hell. I didn't buy it of course, but I thought it was pretty creative on his part, so I caved. I met my husband at Valparaiso University in graduate school. I remember when we first met--OH my gosh--whew, he took my breath away... I have one grown daughter whom I love with all my heart, and am most proud (Cindy graduated with dual majors with high honors from UOPX-Orlando). I am also most thankful for my beautiful grandson, Zach.
College for myself from '85 till '00--can't even entertain the thought of that now especially since I don't buy into traditional Western medicine. Into Alt. health now primarily, doesn't pay as well, but that's part of the package, if you know what I mean. My husband and I were still both kind of school junkies after moving to Florida and both took post graduate classes. I graduated from UCF with an ARNP in family medicine and my husband graduated with a Juris Doctorate from Barry University Law School. (Don't get me wrong--I know this all sounds like a bunch of B.S. It does to me too, believe me I would never think of wasting precious time-away from friends and family in a stupid classroom again--never). Looking back I probably went about ten years too much. What a mistake. Don't get me wrong,I'm not necessarily against education, (not out loud in my home anyway since my husband's family are all a bunch of teachers and theologians and naturally skilled in debate-some of you may know Dan's mom. She is principal at Lowell High School currently) but, I believe there is a limited amount of worthwhile knowledge that can be gleaned from inside a classroom--unless you get to sit next to you know who in algebra class, right! ha-ha-ha.
Take care all. It was great fun to travel down memory lane, and remember how rich we all were then--even if we didn't know it.
