Brenda's Story
In high school, I thought I would be a great teacher, I loved to be around children, but I did not think the position paid enough and I really wanted to travel, so I took another path. I got married and joined the U.S. Air Force. I became a pharmacy technician in the 60th medical group at Travis AFB in California. The job was too "assembly-line" like, and it was not the career for me, so I returned to college part-time to plan for my future. After my children were born, I decided that I wanted a job that let me work and be with my family when they needed me. I became a licensed daycare provider in my home on Bolling AFB in Washington DC. I really enjoyed this job and I was good at it. When we moved back to Erie, PA, I became a personal care attendant for a young woman with MD in a wheelchair. thought to myself, if she can do it I certainly could too. I assisted her with her student teaching at Barber National Institute. I loved it there. I was hired there as a teacher's aide and after about three months; I knew this was not enough. I did not want to assist the teacher. I wanted to be the teacher. This has been a lengthy process, but I know that I am on the right path now.
1. My first goal was to receive my bachelor's degree in early childhood education and find a job. I accomplished that goal and I am currently working as the preschool director at Christ United Methodist Preschool.
2. My second goal, was to receive my master's degree in special education. This goal has also been completed. I really have a soft spot in my heart for young children with special needs.
3. My current goal is to continue learning and find a job I adore.
