Brenda's Story
Life
I have been married to my 2nd husband (my first marriage ended in divorce after 7 years) for just over 26 years. We have a 25-year-old married daughter and a 22-year-old son. Since being married to my husband Richard, we have lived in the same four-bedroom house in Simi Valley and have no plans to move. I have a Master's Degree and am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) since Dec, 1997. My primary work experience has been as a Children's Social Worker in Los Angeles County Dept. of Children and Family Services, investigating allegations of child abuse. I retired from LA County last year. Currently I am enjoying just being able to stay home and do the things I couldn't when I was working or raising the children. I love to travel and my husband and I have traveled to numerous places. Our most recent trip was to the Big Island of Hawaii. ree time. I have volunteered with my trained, certified therapy dogs as a Pet Partner, visiting elderly in residential facilities, people in hospitals, battered women's shelters, etc. I also have an 14-year-old African Grey Parrot. My life has turned out to be a very happy and, for the most part, successful one.
School
I guess I'd be considered a "nerd" in high school. All I did was study, study and study. But my studying paid off because I got a full scholarship to U.C. Santa Barbara when I graduated. I started UCSB Mar.,68 and completed my BA in Sociology July, 1971. I graduated college but really didn't know what I wanted to do for a career, so I worked in the grocery industry for the next 7 years. I started the masters program at Cal State Northridge 09/82 and received a Masters in Educational Psychology, Counseling and Guidance 06/87. I completed 3000 supervised hours and became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist 12/97.
