Brenda's Story

Last football game performance of the South Oak Cliff ROTC Girls drillteam? I was the guide arm carrier who was Twirling the flag and doing the Robot single person in the front of the Platoon. Brenda Armstead for though of you who knew me while attendant school in the DISD area elementary, Junior high and High school. At that time I had 3 brothers,2 sisters and plenty of cousins and friends around while I was attending school at South Oak Cliff High. We knew everyone family members parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and sometime grandparents at the school we attended for the chikldren that were close to us. My family and I attended George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, C. F. Carr, Albert Sidney Johnston, William B. Miller, John Neely Bryant, Harry Stone, Harrell Bud, Lisbon, Freddrick Douglass, W.W.Bushman elementary and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sarah Zawalt, Boude Storey, Kimball Junior high and Lincoln, Madison, F. D. Roosevelt, South Oak Cliff High. My best friends were DeVetta S., Jeannie B., Glenda T., Sarah & Patricia S., Martha M.,Sandra H.,Paula R., Lowell T., Jatum B., Jill W., and others. Our teachers knew our siblings including cousins because some of us had the same teachers. Everyone that I came in contact with became friends to me. Your sister and brother who were younger were like family to me, because mine and your were about the same age. I got married while in my senior year in high school to my husband Gerald who left school in his Senior year to join the Marine Corp 1973 while I stay in Dallas to finish High school under my maiden. The classmates and teachers who were close to me knew this as to be a fact. My best friend Jeannie had her baby a week after we graduated. I left Dallas after graduation for Hawaii. I lived in Kanehoe(Kbay)with a family who was a friend to my husband for 3 months, then we moved to downtown Wakiki were we lived when my daughter was born a year 4 months later in 1976. After my daughter was born we moved to Kailua out side of the base. Came back to Dallas in August 1977, one week after the Jackson 5 had a concert in downtown Dallas at the Memorial Audtiorium. I stay home for a short period of time then moved to Tustin, California in November 1977 where my husband was station at El Toro/LTA and Santa Ana. We have lived in Tustin, Santa Ana, El Toro, Anaheim and now Perris in Riverside (County)California since that move in November 1977. We have never lived in Los Angeles. I have used my education to better myself as we were taught to do in school (Get an education and it will take you a long way). Like Muhammid Ali use to tell when he came to visit us in our senior year. Stay in school getting an education will take you a long way. My education from high school got me gainfully employment into the clothing business working at a discount store then in the Insurance industry ...Expand for more
working for a insurance company working as mail & record clerk, business machine operator, diskette duplicator and a Office supervisor. Also perform duties as a data entry inputting information while I worked out on the floor and then became a computer operator. I have met alot of different people who were my friends. My brother Billy did well for his self after graduating from school in 1974. He join the Marine Corp travel while he did his tour of duty, worked with my father in the lumber business. Became a white and blue collar worker in the corporate world and in warehouse got married and divorced no children. My sister Wanda graduated in 1977 from South Oak Cliff went to Allstate Business School in Dallas. Married her husband Robin L. Stevens Based in the neighboring city in Texas and travel to Germany had three children who now live in Ohio with their dad. Billy, Wanda and my parents are deceased buried in Dallas, Texas. My son was born in Santa Ana, California 1983 when I worked for a Insurance company. I left the insurance industry while they did consolidation because the distribution and data center moved out of state. I then gained employment with the County Of Riverside (California) computer operator and became a supervisor later. I have worked in the clothing industry (stores), private sector and as a civil service worker for the County. Billy ,Wanda, Gerald and myself attended college in the Orange and Riverside Counties Community Colleges while living here in California to farther our education. My brother Arthur lived in California several years then return back home to Dallas. Anthony still live out here in California. My younger sister Bellinda has never left home, she just comes to visit every now and then. This has really been an experience meeting people of all races and how they do things. Different from what I know and learned at home (Dallas). I worked with people who were related to the Kennedy's and others. I never would have thought that I would be living in California you know there was a lot of things going on in California when we were in school in the 1960 & 1970's. We are still here in California. My husband and I were logon to Youtube to see what was happening in (Dallas) South Oak Cliff area and it looks nothing like when we were living in Dallas. Oak Cliff looks like South and North Dallas (Bunton). Blacks, Indians and Mexicans people are now living near Marvin D. Love airport and White Rock Lake area. That area use to be all Whites people living there. Miniority were not welcome on that side of town to live unless you worked out there. Remember the story about the woman ghost she comes around when it was raining at White Rock Lake (old Tail). Well I guess it has gotten a little better there in Dallas. The Kennedy kids have gotten older and are still looking for answer about President John F. Kennedy.
