Brenda's Story

Just published my second nonfiction book--Talent Luck Courage--about Mom, Uncle Robert (Robert Clary of "Hogan's Heroes") and their impact upon my sister, Barbara, and me growing up in Irving. My biography of my mother--One of the Lucky Ones--is finally published--available at amazon.com or through Nightbird Books in Fayetteville, AR and at barnes&nobles.com. There's a youtube video--search Hannover House to view it--and a radio interview--google Ozarks at Large and type in Brenda Hancock or Nicole Holland in the keyword box to listen. Hope you enjoy. Maybe because my mom was from France--who knows--I always wanted to see the world. As a single parent surviving on a teacher's salary, I knew that wasn't possible. Then I found out about the Department of Defense Dependent's School, applied, and was hired the first year I applied. My girls and I went to Korea where our eyes were opened to a completely different culture and way of life. While there, I met the most wonderful man who happened to be in the Army. He got transferred back to Missouri, so in the spring of the year, I had to decide whether to take the transfer I'd been given and take the girls to Brindisi, Italy, or quit DoDDS and go to ...Expand for more
Missouri to marry my soldier. I chose the soldier and never have regretted the move. After two years in Missouri, we moved to Darmstadt, Germany, and I taught two years in Frankfurt and a half year in Heidelberg before we got transferred to Colorado Springs. After 18 months in Colorado, we moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where my sister had moved. I taught for 9 years at Farmington, AR--just down the road--and for 6 years at Fayetteville High from which I retired in June, 2011. During my teaching career, I've taught all those subjects everyone loves (I'm kidding)--English 9, 10, 11, 12, and AP English Lit, pre-algebra, Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, French I, French II, French III, and AP French along with a couple of years at the elementary (5th grade) and a few others at the middle school level doing 6th grade math, 7th grade reading, 8th grade math, and study skills to 7th graders. I also spent one year as a permanent substitute teacher for educable mentally handicapped students at the high school level teaching transition ed--reading, math, and life skills--that was one tough year! Special ed teachers aren't paid nearly enough! I have 3 daughters and a son, along with 3 granddaughters.
