Brenda Lyn's Story

Life Known as Brenda Lyn Willmore. Born in Logan, Utah... one of those, "Honey, get to the closest hospital 'cus the baby is being born NOW!" kids. Born bald (I guess Mom didn't eat enough protein, huh?), hair grew in various shades of blonde which gradually turned brown as I got older. Usually wore it long & down to my butt. (Cut it in 2004, regretfully, & am now letting it grow back out again. Identity crisis! LOL!). Dad was primarily English, w/little bit of Irish ancestry & a teeny bit of Scottish blood. My mother was born & raised in Mexico within a prominent political family. She became an American citizen sometime after she came over to US embassy as a translater. Parents divorced at age 4. Moved to Torrance, Calif. We spoke Spanish within our home when my grandmother moved in (& until she died when I was 12) because she didn't know English. "Castellano" without the lisp. No dialects, slurs or rapidity. We moved from Torrance, California to Harlingen, Texas when I was barely turning 13 yrs old. I was raised LDS (Mormon) & embraced their Christian teachings. I NEVER took drugs of any type, rarely tasted alcohol except to taste a teeny-tiny bit to see what all the fuss was about, & I didn't smoke. I was very quiet and kept to myself. Looking back I sure had been quite naive about many things. I didn't date much. When I dated, my dates tended to be much older as they behaved more respectfully towards me & respected my standards. I left Harlingen to go on to college in Rexburg, Idaho (currently called BYU Idaho) where I met, & eventually married my college sweetheart, Alan. We were married for 22 yrs, together for 24 & had 4 kids, one son & 3 daughters. We moved often in the first few years of marriage, & eventually settled in Alan's territory in Kansas City area. We bought a house in Blue Springs, MO. where all my kids graduated. Dabbled in body-sculpting & enjoyed exercise with Alan & kids. I was a stay-at-home Mom who also added income with years of Avon, in-home childcare, selling homemade crafts for Christmas money, & I invented a Summer Activity Club for Kids at a nearby gym where I hired my own Staff & created tons of exercise & fun for the members' kids. In addition to creating activities inhouse & out-of-house for my daycare kids, whom I ran around with my own 4 to various sports & social events, I was also a den leader for cubscouts for 4 years & helped out with day camp, & I also was a girl scout leader for 2 years & ran girls around to sell cookies. It was fun working on all of their merit badges the kids had to earn. I think I was the one who had more fun! I managed to raise a good portion of Blue Springs kids well into their teen years... They are all out there somewhere...beware! It was truly fun seeing many of my classmates at the 20th class reunion. Alan accompanied me. We relived our honeymoon at South Padre Island. In 1996 helped oldest daughter attend expensive MU. Worked at a disabled adult day-hab as a program assistant. Helped develop the original program. The latter years as the Health & Fitness Classleader, & Music Director. Very rewarding! Divorced in 1999. Ended up with empty nest syndrome at same time. Not good. Boo-hoo! Dated Steve for 4 1/3 years, remarried on August 7, 2004. Uh, ...still practicing on getting this right! 3 daughters have college degrees. Son left to get his. All married. All live here in or close to town. Yay! Am a granny with natural color hair & with very few, not so very obvious grey hairs!! Sadly retired from work May'06 due to back injuries. Now housewife & occasionally babysit son's 3 daughters. Selling home to son. Built new home in country. Grain Valley, 10 min. E from son. Ive remained in contact with Sylvia (Leal) Sanchez(wonderful woman!), & with David Castillo (who had been my very best friend during that time period). I have been also looking for my other very best friend, Jimmy Longoria. Ideas? Post pictures & update your bios so I can take a peek & know more about you! K? Am currently active on FaceBook where I also have extensively posted photo albums. Look me up over there, too. Many of us are posted both places to have better advantage in reuniting with those we cared about while in school. Take care! ~B School Elementary school years began in Torrance, California at the age of 4 in kindergarten. The age cutoff back then was to be 5 by Dec 1st (something like that...). I'm a scorpio born on November 16. I lacked terrible coordination and jumped rope like a flea jumping, just one big spring at a time, not the little jump in-between! Most of the time I jumped ON the rope.... I spent a lot of time turning the rope for others to do the jumping... I had pretty good grades! I was in a "pioneer" school which was typical in the part of California I grew up. If there was something wacky that someone or the gov't wanted to try out on some little human guinea pigs, it was Arlington Elementary School in Torrance. It was interesting. But the grades did not indicate what was truly being learned throughout the rest of the US!!! I floated around thinking I was so smart (above-average percentile and higher in others). I even found out I have a high IQ (can't remember the figure though), and that I am also ADHD (just "hyperactive" back then). In Torrance I was THE quiet member of the elite girls groups in school...one of the "popular" crowd. I didn't do anything spectacular... I was just THERE...and invited to all the parties. I must have been the pet... lol! Moved away at the beginning of 8th grade. This was both exciting, but also quite traumatizing as I did not want to leave ALL my many friends!!! My first experience with Harlingen, Texas was as ...Expand for more
a transfer student from California to Gay Jr. High in Harlingen (I've had to explain the name of the school many times as an adult living outside of Harlingen!). The Latin-Americans didn't know that I understand Spanish quite well and they often spoke "behind my back" in spanish...lol!... joke on you! *wink* *wink* I only knew about California history and geography, etc., and failed the tests regarding Texas, which I knew nothing about except for stories about giant mosquitos which could carry a man off!! I got my first several "C"s, "D"s and "F"s. I thought I was "slow" all of a sudden, even though I was put at the "average" level, and with those who plan to attend college. I had to work extra hard to bring up my grades!!! Ick!!! I hated being in that school! I just didn't seem to fit in very well and was grateful to those who eventually became my closest friends... Maggie Cruz, Jimmy Longoria and David Castillo. I attended Harlingen High School. Made much better grades. Took 2 college classes: English and History in the evening for a couple of semesters, while still in HS. Graduated with a 4.0. I had taken drama (would know my lines 100% offstage just to forget them at 5% while onstage with the curtains drawn and with everyone looking at me and having to be prompted throughout!!!), intermediate/adv. Spanish (only English surname in my group and still got the A's!), and very many business courses in addition to the required courses. I had a difficult time in High School with malicious gossip, but was fortunate to have met MANY NICE people who got to know me better and who made the time there more worthwhile. Thank you for digging deeper! I was a member of the Pep Squad and rarely missed any games. (See my mouth caught in mid-yell in the yearbook....scary!) I also enjoyed doing the UIL Poetry Interpretation competitions in the other schools. My regret is that my shyness had kept me from becoming more active in other school activities which would have enabled me to use or to improve many of my skills and talents. I graduated in 1975 at 17 years old! Leaving home was frightening!!!! College I attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. Met Alan, who agreed that if he wanted to date me, that he'd have to devote time to study with me first. David Castillo visited me from Lincoln, Nebraska! Alan and he hit it off as friends, too. I hated to see him leave. Had to leave 3 semesters later with "incompletes" and without my degree (!) due to double pnuemonia that had difficulty clearing up. Told to go on home and try again another time. That was in Nov. l976. Well! Alan came after me from Idaho and married me on Feb. 25, 1977 which put an end to my returning to school.... busy getting pregnant over and over and over and over again!...and placing "parenthood" above "student". Workplace I've worked as a clerk, receptionist/bookkeeper, secretary, and have done sales over the phone (yep, I was one of those pesky pain-in-the-butt people who disturbed you while you were cooking, watching a favorite TV show or game, or while you were in the middle of lovemaking! K? Get over it...lol!) while in my very early years working my way through school, or while as a young mother making extra money. I worked 12 hrs shifts MWF as an attendant & personal trainer in a family gym where I had also done my own training as a competitor-hopeful back in 1984. Eventually I invented my own program for children ages 6-14 and sold the idea to that gym for a summer program. I supervised it for 9 years before I retired from it. Paid good money to have lots and lots of fun teaching kids basic and advanced exercise, health, sports and weightlifting skills. I brought on teen mentors and adults who volunteered their time to teach some of these skills to motivate these kids to eventually join an organization that they can stay with to maintain a much healthier lifestyle throughout their growing years... and hopefully into adulthood. This program also allowed for me to hire my own kids to work with me in the summer so that they can maintain better sleeping and rising schedules, AND attain good work ethics that I instilled at their young age. I hired only kids that I have known for years, or who had fantastic ability to work with children. In 1996 I went to work for a Day-Hab program where I helped disabled adults with various impairments (physical, mental, emotional, social, in any combination thereof) to socialize properly, to emote more effectively and acceptably, taught my own technique of speech therapy, assisted them with fine & gross motor skills, i.e. to walk, exercise to strenthen withered limbs and spirits, etc. Other than motherhood, this has certainly been the most rewarding of jobs. It is a great feeling to daily be of service to someone who truly needs and appreciates and loves you despite yourself. I love it! To KNOW that YOU have made a difference in someone's life that is obvious and useful and helps another achieve positive results that can actually be measured. These feelings are also reflected by my co-workers. Very humbling! This job has meaning. Too bad it doesn't provide better pay. Another bonus is that it was merely 3 minutes driving distance from my Blue Springs home! I've walked it in 15 minutes, up and down the hill I live upon! It was a joy to work with my clients who came in daily from their homes to learn, to play, and to socialize in ways that provide them a better quality of life! It was truly a sad event when I had to leave that day/hab on May 2006. Now my workplace is my home and garden, and where ever anyone needs me to be on days that I am more physically capable of functioning "normally". LOL! (What's normal...hmmm?)

Am NOT feeling guilty or embarrassed.
I'm utterly disgusted with the current trend in irresponsible, malicious, disrespectful exercising of the Constitutional right of free speech, regardless of spiritual or religious beliefs. Ughhhh!
