Brent's Story

After graduating from Hoover High in 1978, I attended Brigham Young University (BYU) for my freshman year of college (1978-79). In August 1979, I began serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Louisiana and Mississippi, which was an extraordinary experience. Upon completion of my missionary service (August 1981), I returned to my studies at BYU completing a Bachelors of Science degree in Geology in 1986, followed by a Masters of Science degree, also in Geology at BYU, in 1989. In 1990, after a short stint as an environmental consultant, I began working in the State Superfund program of the Utah Division of Environmental Health (which later became the Utah Department of Environmental Quality), though at that time was part of the Utah Department of Health. Initial duties were as a Project Manager, overseeing the CERCLA process for large Superfund sites. In 1993, I was hired as a Section Manager in the Superfund Branch, a position I served in for 10 years. I returned to university in 2002 while working full-time to study Business Administration and completed a Masters of Business Administration degree (MBA) from the University of Utah in 2004. While engaged in my MBA studies, I was promoted to Superfund Branch Ma...Expand for more
nager within the Division of Environmental Response and Remediation in 2003 . Currently, I serve as the Director of the division (appointed in 2009), one of five divisions within the Utah DEQ. I stay busy in my "free time" by teaching Human Anatomy at Utah Valley University as an adjunct instructor, a "hobby" I have enjoyed since 1996. I am also actively involved in local government having served on my city's Board of Adjustment and now as a Planning Commissioner. I married a wonderful woman in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in November 1999 and together we have three awesome kids, the oldest having just graduated from high school during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her graduation experience has been very different than mine from Hoover so many years ago (virtual graduation, social-distanced car parade of graduates through our neighborhood, etc.). She recently completed her second year of college at BYU. My second daughter is about to graduate from high school and has been accepted to BYU where she will begin her studies this fall (2022). My youngest, a son, enters 9th grade this fall. As a family, we enjoy the recreation and quality of life living in Utah proffers, and occasionally return to Fresno to visit family.
