Brian's Story
Both George Bell and I studied together at Framingham State after high school and we were our own worst enemies - we too often cut class to do something more fun like road trips to Cape Cod, drinking beer and chasing girls. I tried out for the ice hockey team at Framingham but didn't make it. It wasn't a good experience commuting to Framingham from Hopedale every day and I dropped out during the second semester and went to work in the Rockwell Foundry in Hopedale - lets just say I had trouble figuring out what I wanted to do with my life! After working there for 18 months I decided to go in the US Navy Nuclear Power Program on delayed enlistment. During the summer before boot camp, Paul Johnson and I took a road trip in my camper for more than 3 months. We traveled out to the Grand Canyon (and hiked down and camped over night at the bottom) and spent over 2 months in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico and had the adventure of our lives. I went in the Navy in Oct 1974 and attended schools for over 2 years in Orlando, FL, Chicago, IL, and Hartford, Conn. and was stationed on the nuclear fast attack submarine USS Finback in Norfolk, VA in 1977. I spent more than half of the next 3-1/2 years at...Expand for more
sea as a Reactor Operator/Electronics Technician. Fast attacks are surveillance subs and we patrolled the north atlantic and stayed submerged most of the time - on one deployment we traveled under the polar ice cap for 2 weeks. We made port calls in Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Norway, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and the Netherlands Antilles. In 1979 I met Paula Land in Hampton, VA. I got out of the Navy in 1980 and married Paula in 1981 in Brunswick, Maine. I later went back to school and got an Assoc. Degree in Engineering. We have 5 terrific children - 4 girls (24, 21, 16, 9) and one boy (14) that were all born in the Wash DC area. We lived in Maine for 3 years, 3 years in Geneva, OH, 16 years in the Wash DC area and now 8 years in Athens, AL. My second oldest married in June 2009 and she is in her final year of Nursing School at the Univ. Of Alabama. Since leaving the Navy, I have worked in the commercial nuclear power industry, except for a 3-year job working for a missile defense contractor in Huntsville, AL. I am now a nuclear consultant engineer working out of my home office. We have home-schooled all of our children from kindergarten on up, and we are very active in our Church.
