Brian's Story
The decade that was the sixties was pretty amazing as it turns out, and it will continue to become even more so as we all get closer to being octogenarians. It's a shame that life is now so complicated and influenced more and more by 3 levels of government interference (in my opinion). Of course some government rules are fine but I think it has become too big to stop.
After VP, I had a short career as a cartographer but when offered $600 more per annum to become a computer programmer, I left for the money to join Sears where I had aready been working part time. I helped to write the credit card system there and then remained in the various supervisory and management jobs until 1992 when I was uncerimonously layed off by Amdahl Corp.
At this point I had to re-learn some of my technical skills in order to gain some kind of employment. At the end of my 6 month paid layoff, I managed to find a 2 month contract at Loblaws. Two months grew to 2 years and then my confidence returned. I obtained several contracts in the US and began commuting to Kansas City and Cleveland Ohio from my ...Expand for more
home in Oakville.
My daughter was born in 1975 and my son in 1978. Everything was fine until my wife came down with cancer at the end of 2001. That was something that we had never thought could happen and life changed dramatically as she passed away in Feb 2002.
I had this feeling that my life could be jepardy also and i began playing indoor soccer, hockey, golf and bowling in order to be in the best possible physical shape. Unfortunately my employer in Cleveland did not agree with my 2 hour lunches I took to play soccer and we mutually agreed that I should retire. That happened in 2003.
I haven't really worked since other than teaching some computer courses and finishing a few basements for people and I haven't looked back. I have found true happiness by retiring. I continue to play hockey 3 times a week in winter and pickle ball 2 or 3 times a week, as I feel the older we get, the more active we must be. Let's see if that works...
I should also mention, I remarried 4 years ago to a retired computer consultant from Trinidad. So far our marriage is working out very well.
