Life
I still remember running down the steps at Dunton after graduation thinking "Well, what happens now....?" Lots, as it turned out - with (hopefully) more to come.
Started off working as a management trainee in a department store in Ottawa, then sold motorcycle parts for a year before getting started on my real career which is going to sea for a living as a marine engineer. It was 34 years (?!!?) ago that I first set foot on board an ocean research vessel based in Esquimalt, B.C. as an engine room assistant. Since then, I've sailed on trailer suction dredges in the Arctic, Fast Ferries on the west coast, ocean-going tugs in the North Atlantic, ferries and offshore supply vessels on the east coast of Canada, and did a year and a half in the Gulf of Mexico working out of Mobile, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Pensacola and Del Carmen in the Bay of Campeche. een sailing as Chief Engineer since 1987. Also picked up a helicopter pilot licence along the way in 1981, but there were no jobs available for rookies, so I had to go back to sea to pay the bills.
I'm on my second marriage - the first, having been fueled mostly by hormones and youthful optimism, lasted only 15 years - but I got it right this time and am living happily in the country outside Murray River, Prince Edward Island (although I do occasionally miss the rat-race in Vancouver). Had one daughter from my first marriage, and my new wife has two sons who are about the same age as I was when I ran down the steps at Dunton for the last time..........what goes around comes around, as they say, and I hate it when I open my mouth and my Father's words come out!
I often wonder what life held in store for my friends at school - Chris, Steven, Kathy, Lawrence, Marie, Jean and the rest - most of whom were part of the Sorel/Tracy group - perhaps this is a way to find out. Anyways, I hope you're all well, and am as happy with your situation as I am with mine.
