Brian's Story
I have a travel company that creates culinary and music tours/cruises. I started out in travel as an entertainer on cruises to supplement my singing career, assisting on all aspects of the tour creation and fulfillment with Joe Conlin, who was my partner. When he passed in March, 2007, I took over and a year later I took on a new partner, Kelly - she was a passenger on my culinary tour of India and decided she wanted to get back on the elephant (of work!), since her kids are reaching their teens. The company is still called Joseph H. Conlin Travel and Concert Mgt.
Spare time goes to the Musicians Club of New York. Manhattan concert series from October to April and benefit in May. Main deeds: two annual competitions: one for young artists cycles through strings, piano, winds/brass and voice every four years; second competition for composer of recording with at least 16 parts. Started in 1911 by Walter Damrosch, NY Philharmonic ...Expand for more
conductor, the Musicians Club of New York received an endowment from Olga Koussevitzky (widow of Sergei Koussevitzky), who served as president for 12 years in the 60s and 70s. The Koussevitzky Foundation turned over administration of the Koussevitzky International Recording Award to the Musicians Club in the 90s. Joe Conlin was also president of the Musicians Club when he died. Last May, the Board looked around the room and saw I was the only one under 65 and made me president. I've since added a few younger members to the Board... I'm dedicated to keeping the two competitions alive for the next generation. The young artists that compete are amazing. I'd like to raise the profile of the composer's award - maybe solicit recordings outside of the traditional classical field - as long as they employ 16 musicians; but then you have to find judges that can hear beyond traditional classical and discriminate across genres...tough nut.
