Brian's Story
I am counting down the days until I move back to Hawaii - in 2015. Seems far away. But by then I should have enough in pension/retirement to finally get back to my home. I have a house already that I have been renting out. So I will be looking for old pals to go surfing with soon. And I hope to hook up with some people doing tai-chi. Can hardly wait.
After high school I attended UH-Manoa and then worked as a reporter on Oahu, the Big Island, and Maui. I was offered a reporter job in Kansas and moved there. I earned a master's degree from Wichita State University and then a Ph.D at the U of Utah. I am now a college professor in Florida. But I really miss Hawaii. I surf each morning in Florida. But it's not the same as Hawaii. I now plan to retire in Hawaii in a few years. I am a grandpa now. And I study tai-chi. I try to remain active.
When I think back to high school I never realized how good I had it then. I remember surfing at Aina Haina, Wailupe and Portlock early in the morning with friends and how wonderful the ocean was. And those of us lucky enough to grow up in Hawaii take our wonderful weather and Pa...Expand for more
cific Ocean for granted. I was a long-haired guitar player back in school. Dragged my guitar to school every day and jammed behind the gym. Now I am happy to have any hair on my head and I wonder what all the fuss was about hair. Can't we all just get along? I hope to reconnect with friends and jam with them. Surfing, playing music, and talking story with friends was important then and still "good fun" today. Would love to hear from old friends. Like Greg King. Do you still play guitar? And there was a girl named Maile who sat next to me. Anybody know what happened to her? What about a guy named "Duck" who used to take us all surfing in his woody? I would love to catch some waves again sometime with some of the old high school gang. Lucky you live Hawaii. a hui hou.
I always wanted to be a guitar player when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were probably right.
I still love playing guitar. And surfing. So I still dig the things I did when I was just a kid.
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have freedom, respect, and trust to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
