Brian's Story
Life
Man, it's been a long time since high school. After graduation, I went to Texas A&M for MIS. My second year I joined an Airborne Special Operations unit of the Army Reserve. Soon after I spent some time at the JFK Special Warfare Center and a year and a half learning Arabic in Monterey, CA. A month before the course's end, the Sep. 11th attacks happened, I graduated early, was sent to Airborne school, and deployed to Afghanistan with the 3rd Special Forces Group. I spent a year there, came home for about a year, then deployed to Iraq. They were great experiences, but really prolonged my graduation from A&M. During this period, I did some teaching in Germany and Egypt and went to some more Army schools (Pathfinder, Squad Designated Marksman Instructor, Blackwater, and Jumpmaster). I finally graduated in 2005, moved to Austin for one last summer of fun, then took a job at the US Army Intelligence Center in AZ teaching Middle East Cultural Awareness. I did that for a while, got bored, and took a mission in South America as part of a 3...Expand for more
-man Tactical PSYOP Team. We trained an Ecuadorian Jungle Battalion, and did some great stuff for villages of the Shuar tribe deep in the jungle. After that I went back to teaching Cultural Awareness as part of a mobile training team teaching SEALs, Airborne Infantry, and other folks about face-to-face communication, and how to conduct operations without creating enemies. I later decided that I was approaching 30, and should look for some stability. I moved back to Texas to find it, only to get a contracting job with a new Gov't program called "Human Terrain Systems". Basically, we serve as cultural advisers to Brigade and Division Commanders to help predict populace behavior and 2nd and 3rd order effects of military operations. That's what I'm doing now. I'm currently at Al Asad Air Base in Anbar Province, Iraq. Hopefully when this is over, I'll have a job with the State Department as a Special Agent. I was given a conditional job offer after a lengthy hiring process, but the medical and security clearances take time. Wish me luck!
