Brian's Story
AT&T recruited me out of college, and I was in corporate public relations at their world headquarters in NYC, and New Jersey, until I retired in 1999. Used to appear on TV (Today Show) and in print (NYTimes, WSJ) frequently as a spokesman.
Was director of the AT&T InfoQuest public science center in NYC, and media relations director at Bell Labs and, after its spinoff to Lucent, at AT&T Labs.
(Bell Labs was the home of the transistor, the laser and the digital computer, and had a budget of $3 billion per year.)
While at Bell Labs, I created and produced a series of science shows for kids that aired on PBS, and for which I was nominated for two Emmys.
As you may have read in the Townsman, in 1985 I had more than my 15 minutes of fame when I was gunned down by a Chinese "tong" (gang) in Chinatown, New York City, while having dinner with my godson (4 years old) and his parents. the option of surgery being so risky. ("OK," I told the doctors, "from now on, I can tell people that no matter where I go, that I have a little piece of New York City next to my heart."
When I left Bellevue Hospital in NYC, the doctors said I would be fine, but I could never have an MRI because the magnetic pull of the machine might move the bullet (which could be made of anything including lead) into the heart or aorta, etc. Who knew that five years ago I would need many MRIs to help diagnose a huge brain tumor I had, the result of a back-of-the-head injury I sustained in a fall in third grade at the Fisk School.
But I digress...
In retirement, I am an active community volunteer helping the elderly and disabled.
I live in Bedminster, N.J., with my wife, Jean, who is a group director of diabetes drug discovery at a major pharmaceutical company.
Over the years, I have kept up with a number of friends from the Class of '66, and would be pleased to hear from you.
