Brian's Story
Though most of you will not remember me....many of the photos in the 1977 yearbook (Annual staff '77) and a few in the 1978 yearbook were taken by me. That's why I remember so many of you. What You may remember is the nut with the camera! I didn't make it in many photos because I was behind the camera.
I was born in Virginia, but traveled my whole childhood! My father was career Army, retired in 1978. I entered the Navy in 1977 (Delayed Entry) and went active duty days after graduation 1978. My fathers brothers both retired from the Air Force. In fact, all the men on both sides of my family served some military branch as far back as we can trace. For this reason my family always traveled and lived in a variety of locations worldwide. I can't say I considered any particular place home, though Copperas Cove, Texas, was my home during my high school years and has a significant place in my heart and memories. Having seen much of the world and this country I'm now content to hang my hat in South Carolina and spend time with my family. Though, I still have a spot in my heart for Texas!
I had a "very" diverse and rewarding Navy career, I retired to spend time with my family when our four kids were all teenagers. During my Navy career in addition to my duties, when on shore duty, I volunteered in my local communities and was involved in law enforcement and firefighting for years. Upon retiring I pursued these fields becoming the Deputy Coroner, a Deputy Sheriff, a City Police Officer and a Firefighter simultaneously. I was never home, worked continuously, and this proved in opposition to the reason I retired from the military. Life as it does, through me a curve ball and opened my eyes. Leaving public service and moving to South Carolina , I reverted back to my engineering background, started and ran a small business. Though by the time I started the business only one of our four children (G,B,B,G) w...Expand for more
as still at home; my youngest son was attending college NROTC and helped in the business. I have now fully retired! Now the song "Cat's in the Cradle" has significant meaning to me...Both boys are in the Navy. Without all the kids at home my wife of 35 years and I have started a second life: who knew?
Interesting note:
A long time back, about 1983, I ran into Mrs. Lutz (Spanish teacher). She was single (divorced) and in the Navy! I had a crush on her in High School, she still looked good, better in uniform! Had the same wonderful personality! Though by this time I was happily married. Wonder, if she retired.
We all know life doesn't always turn out like we hoped or expected but, if I was given a do-over I wouldn't take it. You have to take the bad with the good. I'm the person I am, good or bad, and have the family I do because of the experiences I've had in life. Now, at this point in my life, with whatever wisdom I've accumulated, I hope I can continue to guide and influence my children and family so they may not have to experience some of the bad things I have, and can experience many of the good things life has to offer!
True to form both my sons are in the Navy. All in all, I don't know of a greater complement a son can pay a father than to follow in his footsteps. I have two! Both are leaps and bounds ahead of where I began my career; maybe due to some of my wisdom! My eldest daughter graduated from USC (South Carolina) and moved to Korea teaching English. She has since returned and at 33 remains unmarried, no children, and it would seem in no hurry to change that. She has spoken of joining the Navy, we'll see. My youngest is married and just had her second child. This will be our fourth grandchild! Wow, where did the years go?
I'm sure many of you have similar stories and experiences, many even more interesting. So, I won't ramble on any more.
Life is a roller coaster, enjoy the ride!
