Brian's Story

Hey ALL .... I have had so much fun on this site!!! Well, actually, meeting the people ALL OVER AGAIN! But, I am cutting back on my expenses and this is one of those things on the chopping block. So, if you want to reach me, you can at BrianSVarley on yahoo or on my space. I hope to hear from you. And, I am EXCITED about the 35 year! Do we have a date, yet???? Peace and Much Love, Brian ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Life SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY STORIES ............. SOOOOOO MUCH TIME HAS PASSED .......... I personally can't believe it? I thought that memories would fade like an old pair of jeans. Apparently, not. Mine are in full color! Anyway, I won't bore you with the slide show .... but only because they don't have that hooked up here, or I most assuredly would... I included quite a few pics. A glimpse, only. Anyway, I just wanted to say "hi". I hope all is well. I put a few questions down below. There are about a dozen or more people I'd like, very much, to hear from... Pretty sure you know who you are. Yes, indeed. So, I can be reached at Brian S Varley without any spaced between at ya hoo dot com. Feel free to drop a line if you like .... peace, bri PS: A few questions for those interested in responding: So,what's up in your life??? Where have ya been??? Where are ya goin'??? I like to ask the intellectual questions, if you haven't noticed? What curveballs has life thrown your way??? PSS: A lot more than you may want to read about my life follows: Life has been pretty good to me? Well, not bad - most of the time. OK. Sometimes it really sucked, but I choose not to talk about that. Yet!!! I've learned a lot - most of it not by choice! Life has a cool way of doing that. Mostly I've learned that I don't know diddly sqat and to expect the unexpected. I have been lucky enough to travel to England, Australia, Mexico (Cabo, Mazatlan, Peurto Villarta, etc.), and, of course, Canada, and so on. I spent New Years for the millenium at Porta Villarta - that was a BLAST! From what I can remember, must've been a gay ol' time???? I tend to go back bi - annually now. Last time stayed at a prepaid resort with my signficiant other at the time. We had a blast and I suggest that is the way to go! Bungy jumped in Canada parasailed and flew in a glider in Australia! I still parchute and repel (<<< Alright, I can just hear the sarcasm with that word .. lol!). I know my stuff is pretty light. I don't have children - so I get to do other things, but I don't get to see myself in somebody else's face or behavior. I can't imagine how hard and wonderful that must be. It's just not in the cards with my lifestyle. Anyway, hope you are getting from life what you wanted. That's pretty important! Well, to summarize the last twenty years: So I graduated HS and then, it has been a gay old time getting here: US Army - MI/96D - Ft. Huachuca/Leonardwood/Hood/ and Boling AFB, College at SWOCC/OSU/UO and WOU - masters in counseling. I am working as a qualified mental health professional / masters level counselor. Isn't that a hoot! An interesting turn of events! ha ha... College Masters in counseling....really enjoyed my instructors there..., from WOU, College of Education, 2001; Undergrad at OSU Poli-Sci - minor in Soc - Russian Studies Cert Prog - Honor Studies, 1986 - Had the time of my life here! Excellent people (at the school and in the community) and school!!!; post grad at U of O, 1989-90 (did not graduate with a degree from U of O) - didn't care much for this campus ... I was going through some huge life obstacles, so that could be why ... who knows; and SWOCC - WONDERFUL people all 'round, really flourished there - exceptional quality!, with AA degrees, Social Work - Criminal Justice Administration - Liberal Arts, 1983; and, Graduated Military Intelligence Center at Schools at Ft. Huachuca in Image Interpretation (96/D), 1979 - next to basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, this was the hardest thing I ever did! Really enjoyed my fellow participants - like Tony Tomlinson (a red headed Burt Reynolds - who ended up at Ft. Hood with me), Gary Fazenbaker (Who's father was a comand sargent major and his Mom was one of the sweetest women that ever crossed my ...Expand for more
path), Pvt. Jay Topping (Who turned me onto reading - "A Separate Peace" by John Knowels and a club in Tuscon called the "Whistle Stop"), Spec. Russell, Victor Laguer, and others ... Sgt. Higgenbothem, Wanda Dukes (turned me onto tennis, racquetball, skating, and diso dancing), and many other people. (Graduated HS Marshfield, 1978)... Military US ARMY , 1979-1980, PFC, Military Intelligence, Image Interpreter, 96/D. Recruited: Coos Bay, Oregon station, Doug B. Schapp. Good guy. Didn't lie to me a bit. Then, he invited me back to do hometown recruitment. I did OK... I got to stay for months! Basic: Fort Leonardwood, MIssouri (AKA - Fort Lost-in-the-woods, Mysery - fits), 1979. "Hey, Sgt. Veola Bryant, I'd like to talk to you about that little choking incident with my dog tags!" Some things just can't be forgiven. : ) A drill sargent called me "Trooper Do". it stuck! Oh, we were one of the first co-ed basic training groups, the women getting busted for contraban. The sargents took their candy and booze. On graduation day, the sargents went to retrieve the stuff and it was gone from the secured storage room. Those women were wild and creative, and meaner than the guys on forced marches and during PT: Peggs (dork), Wippler, Sullivan, and Renshaw, & Julie Vichas "vicious". Hometown Recruiter: Coos Bay, Oregon US Army Recruiter Office, supervisor, Douglas B. Shapp, SSG, 1979. I got to go to schools and talk at various events and recruited quite a few people. Was a good learning experience. Thanks Sargent Doug. Advanced Individual Training: Fort Huachuca, Arizona, 1979. WOW!!! I met some of the coolest people in my life: Wanda Dukes taught me how to really play tennis, racquet ball, to roller skate, and to dance - it was disco then, sort of like now, strange? Tony Tomlinson. A red headed Burt Reynolds type, but bigger and drove a little "Le Car", can't tell ya funny it was watching him crawl out of that!!! Nice guy. Gary Fazenbaker and family. Good people. Jay Topping, who turned me onto reading "A Separate Peace" by John Knowels and he took me to a club called the Whistle Stop in Tucson. Ben Johnson (I believe, total comic. A sargent named Joyce Higgenbothem. she was very cool, mover and a shaker. I went to Mexico a couple times, enjoyed that except for one experience I choose not to discuss. In any case, at AIT I met some life changing, affirming people! Fort Hood, Texas (West Ft. Hood, actually, 15th MI Bn (AE), A Compan (II): I didn't like it here much, but Tony Tomlinson and Gary Fazenbaker were there, that was cool. Met a guy named Ceasar, he was this tall skinny black man, really liked funky music and would go to the lake and tan with me. Brenda Yonkman was there, we went and saw "Up In Smoke Together". A tall, sturdy woman with huge biceps and long blond hair. We were waiting in line for this movie once when a little guy with bandaids holding his glasses together tapped on my shoulder and said, "Does your wife beat you, too?" It was a new one for me!!! Yonkman's friend was named "Wheels". I also enjoyed Cpt. Street and the XO, Lt. Johnson. They sent me on to TDY at Washington DC. LOVED IT!!! Washington DC (TDY), 1979-80, US Army Intelligence and Threat Analysis Center (ITAC), Imagery Intelligence Production Division (IIPD). It was cool. Every now and then they would send me to the Pentagon and civilians would ask me my rank. They knew capt., ltc, and the like, but not mine!!! Huge confusing place. Hated having to find offices. Once I was getting candy from a machine and all my change came out of my pocket and I was trying to pick it up - underfoot. And this huge man comes over to help. I get all my change up and then stand up. And I see all these stars on the mans shoulder. I couldn't get a word out. Finally, he just patted me on the shoulder and said, "It's OK trooper do!" How do these names get started???? The day I was discharged. I had a little party with my ex. - Cindy Gallegos-Woods, Tony Tomlinson, Jim Taylor, and a few others. Then I got into my beat up old Plymouth Gold Duster (225 slant 6, mind you - without air or even defog) and headed back to Washington DC to live for a while before moving back to Coos Bay to attend College. There it is, not so short, but sweet....
