Brita's Story

Before I graduated from Kennedy, I had already started at SCC and thought I had planned my life perfectly. But as many of us know, life decided it had plans for me. I transferred from SCC to CSUS and received my degree in English, not in veterinary medicine which was my goal when I started college. After all of those years in college, I wanted to relax and enjoy not going to school. But after a year, I needed to make money, so my cousin's girlfriend told me about a job at MTS(the coporate office for Tower Records, Books, and Video). Although my dream was to work in the bookstore, I took the job and worked at the main office for six months. Luckily for me, a new bookstore was opened on Florin Road. I jumped at the chance, and transferred to the bookstore. I worked at the Florin Tower bookstore for six years until it was obvious that advancement in Tower had many perks, but not a great salary to live on. Throughout my life, decisions about what I should do and where I should go happened not because I analyzed ever step I should take, but because I listened and followed my instincts. A chance to move to Utah presented itself to me and because my brother was in Utah and worked at the Air Force Base there, I decided it would be a great chance to live somewhere else for a bit. The thought scared and thrilled me. I had no preconcived notions about Utah. The only thing I knew was...Expand for more
that it was easy to get around and the capitol was Salt Lake City. During my twelve years in Utah, I meet many different people. I found out that there are people who do live in the same state all of their lives and live in the same neighborhood they grew up in when they were children. I met Mormons who are not werid and are honesty and proud of their heritage and wanted people outside of the state to know that. I saw the state change gradually and shows signs of diversity in the population. I also went hiking through beautiful mountains trails and saw a waterfall 15 minutes from where I lived. I went river rafting in Wyoming on the Snake River and had dinner at the Bar J while looking out over the Great Tetons. I brought a small fix-upper house and worked on it for the 8 years I lived there until I gave up and sold it. I drove in snow and survived. Later my father passed on leaving my mother by herself and me in the position of deciding to stay in Utah or come home to be with my mom. I moved back 3 years ago and after starting over again I am thriving fullfilling the dreams I had in junior high but was afraid to because I was told you will never make a living doing it. I want to live and do everything I can because life can be long or life can be short. The most important thing is to live each day like its your last and be kind to those that accept your kindness. Be happy.
