Bruce's Story
Life
I am currently on active duty as a JAG officer with the Army stationed in Bosnia. (Thats why the picture shows me in uniform holding a weapon.) I was a part time soldier in the California National Guard until I was mobilized for active duty in October 2004. I have been deployed with the Army to Bosnia since February 2005. I hope to be back to my civilian life in California by February 2006. As a civilian, I work as a lawyer for the California Department of Transportation in Los Angeles and live in nearby Rancho Palos Verdes. I have two daughters from a prior marriage (9 and 12 years old). I am married to Kikue Hikone Barr. My wife is Japanese. She is currently living in Japan until I get off of active duty. We have a 1 ½ year old son.
I was not expecting to be called to active duty with the Army when I joined the National Guard but I am not complaining. I could definitely be in worse places than Bosnia. Bosnia is interesting and the people are friendly although they may ...Expand for more
just seem more friendly because most of the time I am carrying a gun. Who knows.
At this point in my life I am happy just to be alive and healthy and have a great family to spend time with. My younger brother Mark died last year at the age of 49 from a sudden heart attack. It was a huge shock to our family. He was married to his high school sweetheart Donna (Dell) Barr. They were living in Buffalo.
My parents moved to Albany a number of years ago. I visit Albany at least once a year but I have not been back to Newburgh in a long time. It definitely seems like a small world sometimes. I was talking to a soldier on our base from the Ohio National Guard. Turns out he grew up near Newburgh (maybe Washingtonville?). His name is Christopher Quimby. He told me his father is now a basketball coach at NFA.
I would love to hear from other people from Newburgh. I plan to visit Newburgh in the next year or two. Best wishes to everyone. Hope you all are doing well.
