Bruce's Story
After high school I was involved in a fairly severe motorcycle accident (June 10, 1980). While recovering from the accident I met and dated Janet Shoemaker whom I eventually married. It was also during this time that I was employed as a laborer in a St Mary's factory, Airco-Spears Carbon. I was employed by them for almost two years before being laid off. Just prior to losing my employment with Airco-Spears I enlisted in the US Air Force. After USAF basic indoctrination training In San Antonio, TX I received training in electronics and computer maintenance (Mainframe Computers) in Biloxi,MS. I was initially assigned to a radar station in Gibbsboro, NJ. Approx. a year later I was re-assigned to Langley AFB in Hampton, VA. During this time we welcomed the birth of our second daughter, Megan. While stationed at Langley AFB (1984-1990) I was deployed to Riyahd, Saudi Arabia in support of operations prior to the desert shield/desert storm campaign. In 1990, I separated from the US Air Force and remained in the Tidewater VA area employed as manager...Expand for more
of campus computer repair and installation facility for Old Dominion University. I remained in this position until 1994. During this time my personal life also underwent a significant change with a divorce from Janet in 1992. In 1994 I left employment with ODU and began employment with EG&G at the NASA/Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA as an Environmental Systems Control Technician. I remained employed in this capacity until leaving to attend Medical School at Kansas City University of Medical and Biosciences in summer of 1998. After graduation from KCUMB in 2002 I completed a Family Medicine Residency at Memorial Hospital In York, PA. On February 14, 2002 I married Eileen Cunningham. In April 2005 I was commissioned as a Captain in the US Air Force. I was then stationed to Offutt AFB in Bellevue, NE where I was employed as a Family Practice Physician from 2005-2007. After completing a remote tour as a Family Practitioner in Kunsan AB, Korea (August 2007-2008) I transferred back to Offutt AFB to continue my career as a Flight Surgeon.
