Bruce's Story

Life I left San Bernardino to join the Army in 1972 and never went back. I went from high school to flight school to become a helicopter pilot at age eighteen. I did two tours with the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas with 4 years in the seventies and 4 years in the eighties with one trip to Egypt in 1983. I met my wife in Oxnard in 1980 when her car had a flat tire. We were neighbors but it took a flat tire for us to get together. Married with three kids now. My oldest graduated the University of San Francisco in 2004 while my youngest studied at Cal State Northridge and Cal State LA and graduated with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I delivered mail in beautiful Santa Barbara but I live in less expensive Oxnard down the coast. I retired in 2017 at age 62. Granddaughter Rebecca arrived December 2020, Granddaughter Sasha arrived in November 2021, and Grandson Miles arrived in July 2022. Workplace I worked as a Letter Carrier in the beautiful coastal town of Santa Barbara for the past thirty years. Great weather year round ...a big change from those hot summers in San Berdoo growing up in the 60's. I am still the editor of a union newsletter for our local branch of the NALC. I've traveled to Philadelphia, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Anaheim, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Chicago(2022) for our national NALC conventions. My...Expand for more
last route was delivering mail on a driving route on the oceanside of town...no business deliveries, no apartment deliveries, no walking deliveries...very scenic and peaceful. . Now retired at age 68. Military I went from High School to Flight School. Lots of memories learning how to fly helicopters at Fort Wolters, Texas and Fort Rucker, Alabama. The Holiday Inn at Mineral Wells--- where the tradition was to toss you in the pool after your first solo. As a warrant officer candidate, they had plenty of pet names for us. Remember...What's a WOC?...Something that you throw at wabbits! I seem to remember that being a snobird was a painful experience. After we stopped painting rocks and started flying, they eased up on the room inspections, We did get to check out the Denton Dollies or maybe even a overnight trip to Dallas. Remember the white tire areas and the check rides? Then it was on to Fort Rucker and instrument training. We received senior tabs (black) and privileges. After flight school, I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. I was in the 1st Cav Division until assigned to the newly formed 6th Cav Brigade. I was discharged in 1976 but returned to active duty in 1981. I served in the 6th Cav Brigade as a Scout pilot until my discharge in 1984. Only one trip overseas for the 1983 Brightstar exercise in Egypt.
