Bruce's Story
Life
I entered the Army 8 days after high school graduation, and spent the next 3 years there as an aircraft electrician, helicopter mechanic and supply clerk. I got married for the first time in 75 and we had two sons together, Robert and Bruce Jr. We briefly moved north from L.A. to San Jose, just before we divorced in 1980 and I moved back to So. Cal. A short time later, I got custody of my boys and then remarried in 1985. 11 years and a daughter later (Rebecca, born in 1990), I was divorced again, and moved into an apartment with my sons.
My work life up to that point had been pretty much in shipping, receiving, and stores work for various companies, until I was hurt on the job in 1987. I was then retrained as a CAD Drafter. I worked in that field, eventually becoming a supervisor, before I was laid off in 94. I...Expand for more
tried going back to school, but couldn't swing it financially, and finally got a job with TRW as a data analyst in late 95.
When my second marriage ended in 96, I had some personal problems that eventually brought me to homelessness on the beaches of So. Cal. in late 98.
In July of 99 I got a place in transitional housing in the San Fernando Valley. It was here that I began to rebuild my life, taking refresher courses in drafting, and that's where I met my current wife on an online dating site. She lived in western Washington state, and as soon as I was able, I took a bus north, and we were married the night I arrived (in God's eyes, two years later in the states eyes). Because of my past, I have been unable to find conventional work, but I have started a home-based business that I am hoping to make a good living at.
