Bruce's Story

I've been in New York for many years now. I enrolled first out of Collinwood at Case Western Reserve Univ as a Computer Engineering major. I stayed 3 1/2 years and spent most of my time in the music practice room (practicing the saxophone and clarinet) rather than the Computer Lab. By the time I left, many people thought I was a music major. The only A's I was getting consistently were coming in Jazz History and Styles, or any other music electives. I finally had a talk with one roommate who said "you're a computer engineering major who seems to have almost no interest in computers, whatsoever. Why are you here?" He was right and I left Case Western Reserve that next semester in 1977, transferred to Boston's, Berklee School of Music for a year, then joined the army for a 3 year stint playing in a military band mostly in Chicago. After I left the Army, I went back to Berklee and got my BA. Supported myself by playing jazz, blues, salsa and merengue. Then I moved to New York City and got my Masters Degree at Manhattan School of Music. Between the military and gigging on a regular basis I was able to pay for my schooling -- a relief to my parents, I'm sure, since as you can imagine, weren't to thrilled about my leaving CWRU on an engineering scholarship for a career as a jazz musician! Made my living as a jazz saxophone, clarinet, and flute player for almost 20 years. Got a recording contract with a German jazz record label (Enja) and released an album called "Survivors" under my performing name, "Bud Revels." The album can still be found in jazz cutout bins or online in various places. Over the years of playing I was blessed to perform with Buddy Rich, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Temps, Lou Rawls, BB King, did a video with Phil Collins ... these are one I can remember. I've met Miles davis, Herbie Hancock, Bonnie Raitt, Quincy Jones, Deborah Harry, Vanessa Williams, ... a bunch of folks that I've admired in the music industry. Been blessed to travel ...Expand for more
professionally to the Bahamas, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Spain, Finland. I was teaching for several years at Essex Community College, in New Jersey, Jazzmobile in Harlem, Binghamton University during the summer for two years, doing a Broadway show (Black and Blue) ... Unfortunatley, ... about 15 years ago I developed a muscle problem in my jaw that got worse the more I played and had to stop performing by the time my album was released in the States. I moved into the traditional workplace (ugh!) doing desktop publishing in the financial industry for what I thought would be temporary until I found a way to correct the jaw problem. Found out there is no medical correction the specialists I've met know about. I'm working on Wall Street now which I'm sure you've heard is a very volatile environment right now. Most of my co-workers have been laid off and/or let go but I'm still hangin in there. I was present during horrible Sept 11 event but thankfully was unharmed. Started playing piano and organ just to keep my sanity. Then started doing pro gigs as a pianist and playing organ on Sundays at church but not enough to support myself like before. I still miss the former life and still practice daily for an hour or two. I turn on the television and see friends of mine performing with this or that "name" band or act and I miss it quite a bit but God is in control and does things for a reason. Been married to my lovely wife, Uchenna, who is from Nigeria, for almost 7 years and have son who is almost 2 years old, who is Bruce III but we call him "B3" for short. I also tutor math and over the years became rather adept at doing calculations on the Chinese and Japanese abacus which I have sometimes used to to teach my students. I used to be very fast at calculating square roots with the soroban (japanese version)! Enjoy life and love this little boy that God has blessed us with. Look forward to reconnecting with some of my Cleveland buddies. Bud Revels
