Bruce's Story

I am indebted to Ms. Poplin for inspiring the drive to excel. My real learning began after grad school when I launched an open ended journey of discovery. Bending decades of business travel into off hours learning opportunities, I researched at archives and university libraries, browsed used bookstores and museums, toured scenic areas and historical sites. It was my privilege to scale Mt. Sinai, enter medieval Norwegian stave churches and marvel that the voices of my ancestors reverberated within the same spaces in prior centuries, walk across Abbey Road, repeatedly traverse and savor the Blue Ridge Parkway and behold the majestic splendor of dark night skies to peer into the eternal. I collected meaningful Sixties relics such as Beatles memorabilia and recordings, jingles from favorite AM radio stations and items on space exploration. I attended several Paul McCartney concerts & saw Ringo once. Studying magic, I built a library on effects, mentalism, and 19th century spiritualism. Later on, I realized these latter interests instilled a valuable set of skills for detecting deception in a variety of circumstances and contexts. Spirituality continues to be a unifying thread in my life. The works of the late mythologist Joseph Campbell granted insight and perspective that continue to unlock the essence of practical religion for me. For ten years I have taught a class on contemporary issues in spirituality at the church I attend. From time to time, I perform my introspective musical compositions on piano for the worship service. y is a spiritual pursuit. Taking a fancy to Indian cuisine, I traveled to London in 2000, seeking guidance on cooking it. Since my return, I routinely prepare and serve colorful, flavorful faire from Kerala, the Southern Spice Coast of the subcontinent Columbus was in search of. Embarking on a quest for roots, I traced certain of my Norwegian forbears into the 1500’s. On the internet auction site eBay I acquired more than a dozen handwritten postcards my late grandfather sent to his brother from 1908 to 1918! Sharing the boon, I write articles on researching family history, demonstrating the level of interesting detail that can be recovered in accurately recreating former settings and eras of one’s ancestors. Accompanying me on many of the above adventures has been my life companion of 34 years, Heidi. Together, we share three children (Jon, Julia and Kelsey) who were immersed in loving care and active participants in numerous of our cross country travels. Decades on from that Golden Age of being a senior, I am still the inquisitive soul you knew back then, ever passionate for fresh knowledge and engaging dialog. In the interim, I have deepened my awareness and inner vision while broadening my perspectives and compassion. Reviewing my scrapbooks of memories, I count it an honor to have moved through time with many of you. I am looking forwards to hearing about the formative experiences that have shaped your own lives since, with wide eyed optimism, we last graced the halls, classrooms and football field of our high school.
