Bruce's Story
Military
Enlisted in 1987...reported to Greal Lakes Ill for boot camp. Got in a special company that performed during the Boot camp graduation ceromoneys. I marched and played the bass drum. Made boot camp last a bit longer...just over 10 weeks.
Reported to NAS Millington Tennessee for "A" School to learn how to work on aircraft structures.
Got orders to VP-11 NAS Brunswick and served there for almost 5 years. While stationed there I went on 4 - 6 month deployments and a couple detachments. I was promoted 3 times while stationed there and left a 3rd class petty officer. I also left there a newley wed...and a step father. I quit smoking cigarettes sometime while I was stationed in Brunswick.
Left in October 1992 and reported to NAS Oceana Virginia AIMD. I got a really easy job there where I ran 3 programs. I started out painting aircraft parts but got a diffrent assignment...soon after I reported I was promoted again to 2nd class petty officer. I worked as the divisional servmart custiodian, divisional presision measuring equiptment coordinator, divisional engraving lab manager and technician. During this 3 year duty assigment which was shore duty...I accomplished many great things. I learned how to renovate rooms, worked with a lot of drywall and paint, wood trim...I love to work with wood now and do home improvements. I also learned a lot about working on cars during my off duty hours. I also got divorced while stationed there. One of my carrer highlights here was I met the honorable Admeral Mike Boorda who was the Chief of Naval Operations...he actually re-enlisted me for 4 more years that day. It was a very proud moment in my carrer.
Left NAS Oceana for orders to VP-5 in Jacksonville Florida. Spent about 5 years there and went on 3 more 6 month deployments. I also went on a bunch of detachments including a hurricane evacuation. I got promoted...Expand for more
to first class petty officer near the end of my tour of duty there. (December 1999) I actually got to fly one of the aircraft I worked on one day while serving. I got to fly it from the co-pilot's seat...my skipper was the pilot. He told me that when you pull back on the yoke...the houses get smaller...push the yoke forward and they get bigger...turn the wheel to the left ...well you get the picture.
Left Jacksonville in December 1999...I had lost both parents while serving there both within 1 1/2 years of each other. It was a very difficult time for me...I was also doing back to back sea duty tours...so I could set myself up for a shore duty retirement. Got stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Washington. That was the most beauitful place to live and work. I love the weather and climate in Washington state. The breath taking mountians...the people are so kind there. Within 2 1/2 months of reporting there I went on my first of 3 deployments. I had only been off a deployment for 2 months when I reported there...so I actually deployed 2 times in 1 year. It was really tough!
I left Whidbey...broken hearted because I would have loved to stay there. I could'nt buy a set of orders to stay there...so I got stationed back in Jacksonville Florida in VP-30. My carrer will end here and I'm looking forward to that.
I have deployed to: Keflavic, Iceland (4 times) Sigonella, Sicily (2 times) Purtro Rico (1 time) Misawa, Japan (1 time) Kadena, Okinawa Japan (1 time) and Diego Garcia (1 time) 10 deployments total.
Detachments were to Bermuda, Stavanger Norway, Moffitt Field, California Some place in Texas...to escape a hurricane,
The Navy has been very good to me and I have seen many places and things most people only dream of. If given a chance to do it all again...I would have come in right after high school. I'd be a Master Chief by now if I did.
