Bruce's Story

4/25/10 After my sophomeor year at Bemidji, I attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire from which I graduated in 1957. My first grades at Exeter were simply awful. I had never seen such grades! Fortunately, I managed to turn this situation around during the balance of that first year and ended up getting decent or better grades thereafter. After Exeter I attended Yale University from which I graduated in 1961. I majored in Math and was extremely fortunate to have a summer job between my sophomore year and junior year as an actuarial student in Hartford, CT. The role of actuaries is not terribly well known in the United States. Actuaries work primarily for insurance companies or consulting companies and are trained in assessing and pricing insurance risk. Behind most prices for insurance are actuaries. This is probably the primary thing actauries do. Following graduation from college, I married my sife whom I met that first summer in Hartford. We then spent a year at the University of Iowa from which I graduated with a master's degree in actuarial science. I also taught freshmen math dur9ing the fall, spring, and summer terms. I enjoyed the teaching very much but knew that I wanted to continue my career as an actuary. To become credentialed actuaries take a series of exams which have a pass rate of roughly 50% and which take roughly 5 years after college or more to complete. This process is considered the equivalent of attaining a PHD. I became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1968. I was employed as a full time actuary raching senior positions at two companies until I retired from full time employment in 2004. I have continued as an actuarial consultant since the...Expand for more
n with my own 1 person business. My wife Marilyn and I have been married since 1961 and I tell people it is 95% due to her good nature. We have two daughters, Kim soon to be 46, and Michele, 43. Two years ago, Kim adopted a baby girl at age 3 days, one Issabella, born in Philadelphia. As most readers know, grandchildren can be great: when they are tired, cranky, or wet, you can hand them back to their parents. In the meantime, you get to enjoy the happier moments and they serve as on ongoing reminder of the joy and challenges you had raising your own children. We are delighted for our daughter Kim that she has Issabella in her life and for us that she is in our lives. We live in small town in central Vermont. My wife, from age 10 on, grew up in VT, went to grade school in a one room schoolhouse with 3 of her cousins and others, and graduated from a small high school along with 14 others. We do try to escape mud season in VT by traveling to South Carolina in March or April of each year plus a week or more each year in Phoenix, AZ where two of my brothers, Roger and Jerry, live. We have been fortunate to be able to have traveled extensively both in the United States and Europe and continue to travel. I have been fortunate enough to be able to be physically active and among other things ride my bicycle often (including 50 mile charity rides), walk our dog every day, hike, ski, and play golf (now 60 years and still counting). I would very much like to hear from Bemidji classmates about your lives after Bemidji high school. I value the years I lived in Minnesota and the midwestern set of values I acquired from family and friends during those years. Those values continue to serve me well. Bruce
