Bruce's Story

Life After H. S. graduation, attended Nevada-Reno U., rec'd B. A. degree in Social Services. After internship with NV State Parole & Prob. Dept., no job openings in Reno, so went to work for father's insurance business '72-'79. Built home in 1972, then did some spec home building and real estate activities. 1979--fell in love with Kona, Hawaii, after several visits. Moved family from Reno to Kona; built home in Kona, HI (Big Island), then became full-time realtor in Kailua-Kona. Loved tropical living, loved the culture and people, fishing, scuba, ocean, EVERYTHING, and never wanted to leave. High interest rates killed real estate market, so lack of income and high living expenses forced relocating back to "mainland"--ended up in Mesa, AZ. Bought moderate-rage new home, but unable to find permanent work in RE or insurance, so ended up working at downtown Phoenix "main jail" as Detention Officer, for a temporary income. After bankruptcy, divorce, and lack of "job satisfaction", sold AZ home and returned to Reno to build custom home on Truckee R. for family friend in Verdi. Remarried, remained in Reno from 1984 to 1996. After Verdi home project, self-employed as construction "jack-of-all-trades" for next 5 years, then returned to school for Substance Abuse Counseling license. Began working with "at-risk" youth at ...Expand for more
Stead Job Corps facility (No. Reno), and enjoyed the work, so returned to Nevada-Reno for Master's coursework while working at Job Corps. 1996--accepted Career Counselor position in Lodi, CA, at private high school for teens in "juvenile justice system" from network of supervised "group homes". Rec'd Calif. State Teaching Credential in Special Education, then took temp leave in 2002 for major back surgery and rehab. During rehab period, began home internet business on E-bay, and developed into full-time venture. May return to teaching, but enjoying "independent" life-style, traveling, visiting married children and grand-children often, and pursuing coin and vinyl record collecting hobbies. Wife is "stable wage earner", I am the "free spirit", and my interests far exceed my time. Most "life satisfaction" now comes from enjoying career successes of my two married children, and visiting two sweet grand-daughters as often as their parents can tolerate a house guest. My wife's two kids still live with us, and are both in high school. Several back surgeries for spinal disc degeneration have ended my golfing and back-packing adventures, but playing with grandkids is much more fulfilling. The older I get, the faster time passes, and the longer my list of interests and projects become. Reno will always seen like "HOME".
