Bruce's Story
Life
Hi.
I was known as "Bruce" in school, but my first name has always been Ed, and that's what I've been known since.
I retired from my career as a National Park and BLM law enforcement Ranger in January 2004. In 2013, I was appointed to the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission. I have one child, Michaela, born in 2001.
My hobbies include whitewater river running, where I've led trips down the Grand Canyon and other technical whitewater rivers. I also ski, bicycle, run, and still participate in triathlons and other strenuous activities. My daughter and I spend quite a lot of time at our cabin at Big Bear Lake, especially to escape the Summer heat where we live.
College
Living at Yosemite Hall at Cal Poly SLO. I was a procrastinator, and drank a fair bit during much of my college, finally becoming something of a serious student in my senior year. One night I amazed my roomates by doing 2 complete term papers, from scratch, in one evening.
Workplace
After graduating from Cal Poly SLO in 1973, I worked a variety of jobs. This included mana...Expand for more
ging a non-profit recycling center, working as a surveying technician, and as a whitewater river guide.
In 1976, I began working as a Forest Service firefighter, then as a National Park Ranger for many years, and finally as a ranger for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. I patrolled public lands by 4X4 vehicle, horseback, ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile, river-raft, etc.
My duties included law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical treatment, and special assignments which took me to some of the most spectacular parts of the country. I received honors and awards for lifesaving, developing resource management plans to protect Public Lands, and for cooperative work with agency partners.
Some of my special assignments included working Presidential security details in National Parks. After 9/11, I worked several months of security details in Washington DC. Additionally, I worked in the Dept. of Interior's Watch Office, reviewing incident reports from public lands nationwide and preparing a daily summary for the Secretary of the Interior.
I retired in January 2004.
