Bruce's Story

Life After graduation from Clovis High I enlisted to serve four years in the US Navy. I attended Electronics A school at Treasure Island, Ca. and after one year in the Navy I married my true love and high school sweetheart Lorene Williamson and we are still united 48 years later. We were blessed with two children (Girl and a Boy) and now also have two grandsons. Our daughter-in-law passed away in November 1998 and our son is now partnered with a widow from Missouri and her two children. Upon leaving the navy I worked at various jobs while attending both Fresno City College and then Fresno State. I graduated with a degree in General Business Administration and went to work for a company called Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. a provider of global business information services. After a 35 year career with them I retired in January of 2002. Lorene and I currently live in San Jose, California and are enjoying life. We visit with the kids and grandkids and get back to Clovis to visit with family when possible. Would love to hear from any of you. Please feel free to communicate with us. We would love to hear from you. UPDATE: Lorene is no longer able to travel any distance because of a medical condition. We have been unable to go anywhere for about six years now. The doctors are trying to find out what is wrong but so far no luck. Our daughter-in-law Felicia passed away in November 2006 and since then we have been helping our son to care for them while they are out of school during the summer break. They are now 12 and 13 so they don't need much supervision. The youngest has kind of taken over and now cooks breakfast for grandma, grandpa, and his older brother. We are having a great time with them this summer. We have gone fishing and done various other activities and will be going camping in the motor home later in the summer. College Went to college on the GI Bill after the Viet Nam conflict. I started out getting a degree in engineering and then decided that I did not like that so I went back and got a degree in Business. Being married and having two children and working full time meant that I spent most of my time either eating sleeping or studying. I had a niece who when asked what I did for a living replied "Uncle Bruce goes to school" :>) Workplace I started my career as a Navy electronics tech. Then worked as an electrician for about a year. After that I went to work for a radiotelephone shop in Fresno, Ca. I started college in 1968 and majored in engineering. After gettin my degree I decided that was not where I wanted to go and went back and got a degree in General Business Administration. While going to college I worked for a radio station as engineer and an electronics manufacturing firm. Left there to join Dun and Bradstreet, Inc. After 35 years I have retired in 2002. ant to do. <grin> Military Joined in 1960 and after basic training I was assigned to Electronics A school. Upon graduation I was assigned to the USS Endurance MSO435 and spent the next three years there. Made two trips to Western Pacific and served in a joint task force with the South Vietnamese Navy on both trips. Discharged as an E5 in June 1964 at Travis AFB in Fairfield CA. Update Nov 26 2009 | General Bruce's troubles Here is an update on the past few months at the Riley house. Lorene was trying to not wake me at 4 AM but had to go to the bathroom. She staggered and fell and hit the toilet so hard that she broke the water tank flooding the bathroom. I heard her and got to her lying in a pool of blood and water and other bodily fluids. I panicked and called 911 and they hauled her to the hospital in an ambulance. She was not injured enough to require admittance to the hospital so I took her home. Then the water main to the house ruptured (it is 50 years old) causing us to get a bill for over $200. I called a plumber and we had the main replaced as well as the interior pipes for the house with all copper including the showers, all feeder pipes to the sinks and the refrigerator. We now have a great water supply and so we decided to replace the lawns which were not doing well because of the low water pressure. That was just finished when I had the accident that I told you about with the car in the garage. As you know I hit the house furnace and crushed it. So now we have had to have it replaced and it is a pain. We are using three oil filled radiant heaters that are doing a good job keeping us warm. But trying to regulate them seems to be more than I can handle. Lorene keeps telling me she hot then cold then hot. I don't feel the temperature changes, but, I know that it is definitely not menopause because we have been through that at age 60. Thank you for reading our tale it is our way of explaining our being distracted for the past few months. I can now understand and have compassion for others. I have become a true believer in the Alcoholics Anonymous prayer that goes "God give me the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference." God bless your house and all that reside in it. 9-20-10 Udate Lorene and I have both had some serious medical issues during this year. She had a stroke in April and has almost completely recovered. I on the other hand had to have my entire colon removed because of bleeding. The surgeon connected my little intestine to my rectum which was a good thing as I don't have to wear a colostomy bag and things seem normal enough. We both wish that we could have attended the reunion but are both to unstable medically to make the trip. Hope that you all had a lot fo fun seeing old friends and classmates. A Bruce & Lorene
