Burns's Story
Life
Grew up thru 8th grade in South Orange, then went to Admiral Farragut Academy, then moved to Mountain LAkes and graduated from MLHS.
Graduated FDU with BA in English. Three marriages(!) First wife deceased. Divorced from second wife. Third time the charm.
Retired twice! Once from Navy as Master Chief Sonar Technician(Submarines). Spent considerable time as an "acoustic intelligence rider" for Naval Intelligence. Also retired from L. L. Bean in 2003. I still keep my lifetime discount and still have access to the Employee Store, where, as a retiree, I get a discount that is half of what regular employees pay -- and that is not much to begin with. We get all kinds of "stuff," and my wife feels we have too much, but it sure is fun collecting it. Have traveled to Hawaii in '04 and '05 to take the chill off the Maine winter and to Florida in other years.
I was a "Jeopardy!" Grand Champion in 1965, back in the Art Fleming years. Would've liked to compete in the recent Ultimate Tournament of Champions, but the "Powers That Be" pretend that the show started in 1984. Oh, well...
Things changed! I went back to LLBean in '06 to help their Christmas rush and fell on the ice in their parking ...Expand for more
lot, fracturing my back. Diagnosed as "muscle spasms" for 3 months, it was too late when properly diagnosed to correct it , so now I walk like Quasimodo with a cane. I need the cane for balance as I am tipped forward. It's a bummer with only one plus. When I am standing, I really can't look anyone's face. But it allows me to stare at people's chests without them knowing. Great at the beach!
So between my SS, my Navy Pension, Bean Pension, my 401k, the rent on our apartment in our cape farmhouse, and Cheryl's continued employment as a Senior Principal Consultant at Keane, Inc., we are quite comfortable.She's now working part time from home. We now have her 401k, a pension from Merrill Lynch, where she wound up as a Vice-President after 19 years, and her SS. Full retirement in May 2012 then we travel! To be continued... This is the continuation: She retired and then was begged to go back. Keane is now NTT Data. We are going to Hawaii (the Big Island and Kauai) for 3 weels in February 2013. On our way back thru Denver, we'll stop off and fly down to Durango for several days, where my son is a ski instructor and a booze distributor. Oh yes, we went to Key West for 9 days last fall, too.
