Byron's Story

Life Remember a Coke cost you 13 cents, Castlehaven, the old high school and banana seat bicycles. Dairy Queen banana splits were on special at 29 cents. Living in Edwardsville now I don't remember the rivalry everyone else does. Maybe because I use to kick the daylights out of them on the track and in cross country. My kids laugh when I still say the "New" high school (1973). Best looking cheerleaders. Kids run my life now. It's great. I've seen a few old friends and met some new ones from my days in Collinsville. Having lived in Chicago, California, Arizona, and traveled all 48 lower states with my medical career it is nice to settle back into the area. I keep hearing everyone talk about retirement and I can't ever see that being me. I spend some time in Florida with the family (4 kids) all the way south in Naples. I spend my winters working with the wrestling programs in the Metroeast area coaching and watching my kids participate. I didn't realize what a sport it was and how close knit the community of wrestling is until my oldest went out. I think my good friends from high school; David Fedder, Andy Marchiando, Tom Correll, Don Kerkemeyer, Tom Fitzgerald would find it all strange for me to say this but I think it the best sport. No where to run, all eyes staring forward. Maybe it is because after a bicycling accident during a race in New Orleans in 1984 I ruined any chance I ever had at running again. My favorite city is the "windy" one to the north that really doesn't get it's name from the weather but the chastizing of New York writers prior to the World's Fair of 1893. Spent a lot of time there and is the reason I ended up in sleep medicine. I ...Expand for more
wonder often about my 4th grade teacher Ms. Grolier. She made the differnece for me. I hope Mrs. Robinson from first grade at Dorris is rotting in hell after her demoralizing, make you cry, in front of the class, embarass you and your friends (Kevin Perotti RIP 1984) for some sadistic pleasure. Mrs. Woosley from 7th grade made me become the student I wasn't from home room on the first floor at North Jr. High. It's becoming cloudy folks. I have come back to the area and starting to forget the way things were and the folks (kids) I knew and the ones that are gone. (Lonnie Giddings who stuck up for me when I was in 7th and who I stuck up for years later when someone try to pick a 3 on 1 fight with him.) Just want everyone to know I never said a bad word about anyone but thought a lot of them for a few. From my colleges years I say Hi to Chris Plante and Art Kurz(the epitome of the greatest friends to come away from college with memories). To Ruk Peterson and Pete ffitch (got it right Pete) you both had such a positive impact on the way I think believe it or not. To the all of you at North Central, I hated to leave but glad I did. To SIUE, I wish it had been different. Didn't have any personality. The marketing of the University needs to change. There are some great athletes there and have been. Al Grammer, Al Sears and Ernie Badger made me come to love the sport of wrestling. ( I actually went to some of the matches. Probably would have gone more but I actually studied. The Chemistry department was great and so were the professors. Ode to Dr. Thomas Bowman, Dr. Viola, Dr. Spencer. Sigma Chemical and Calgon can kiss my a**! I laugh all the way to the bank!
