Michael's Story

I have scanned through the lists of names of the people I graduated with. I came across names of those who were so familiar to me, but I'm confused 'cause it is going on forty years now. My memory of the everyone and the events of back when have almost faded over the years. Of course we'll always remember those close friends and carry their memories through-out our lives. I realized later from emailing a few other classmates that not remembering those days from back when was not just unique to me. We have all moved on since then and we have experienced new things such as College, Military Service, Viet Nam, Marriages, babys, on & on. All of which became foremost in our memories. My interests into looking into some of my old High School friends are simply out of my curiosity on how they may be doing NOW, and to discover where they may be living NOW. My curiosity is not so much to learn their history for the past forty years. Being respective of those friends, I feel that their past forty year history is really none of my business. Should they want to share more or should I want to share more at a later time, it should be said within the confidence of the renewed friendship. I've discovered by talking to a few buddies how hard the economy had effected them. I heard stories how they lost over 40% of their retirement investments, their 401Ks at work, their jobs got outsourced to either Asia, India, Pakistan or Mexico, they are at risk of losing their homes, on and on and on. This kind of news really wrenches my stomach hearing these stories from them. It reminds me why I'm a recluse in a little town in Oregon. Without knowing how I can help them, I decided to post fifty jokes in the bulletin section on my Profile page. Laughter for me has helped me get through some of my most difficult and toughest times in my life. It gave me the energy and strength to endure them. It is my hope that maybe by posting the jokes that it may help them as well. Doing something for them is better than doing nothing. If I was able to even bring about a smile than it will have been worth it. I will now continue sharing with you as to what is current in my life in my past ten years. I met my present wife, Vicki, in 1997. We moved up to Florence, Oregon in 2001 when the population here was still 6500. Compared to Los Angeles Co., Orange Co. & San Diego Co., Florence is a little slow-paced picturesque coastal fishing town where the daily pace is generally slow. It was to us exactly what we were wanting to find in choosing a place for our senior years. Crime is very low 'cause the larger percentage of the populat...Expand for more
ion are retired senior citizens. To characterize this town best is to say that a traffic jam here in Florence are four cars at the same intersection at the same time, and everyone are still sitting there 'cause no one there knows who has the right of way. I'm now retired, and our life here in Florence has been simply wonderful. Since living in Florence, my wife and I have taken up the sport of ATVing. For those of you who don't know where the best spots for ATVing on the West Coast are, the central coast of Oregon is the ATV capital. We have the best sand dunes and trails here to ATV on with approximately 40 miles of coastal trails and dunes. The dunes spans numerous miles inland and even go right down to the ocean where you can ride your ATV at the waters edge which makes it so breathe-taking to ride on. Take a look at some of my pictures of the dunes in my photo album on classmates.com. If any of you want to go ATVing with us, all you have to do is bring your ATVs and your laughter with you. Email me. When the weather permits, Vicki and I are always out on the dunes having a blast. Summertime when most of the State Park dunes are so wild and busy from all of the Californians and the Washingtonians carelessly, foolishly, and recklessly showing themselves off, we just go out our backyard to where we have over 40 acres of trails and dunes to ride in. Recently, I've been visited a lot on classmates.com by the alumni of 1967. I was still going to Anacapa Junior High when the Class of 1967 graduated. So I can only assume by their visits that they may have been looking for my brother, Robert Eugene Caldwell. I'm sad to say that my brother Bob died in October of 1987 in Santa Cruz CA. Bob loved all, and he will be forever missed and loved by his family, Royalee who was his ex-wife & best friend to the day of his death, & by his many friends. Our memories of him will always be treasured & fondly remembered by all who knew him well. Bob will be first to embrace us all with his infectious mischievous smile and laughter when it's our time to walk through Heaven's Gates simply because Bob was a caring fun loving person. In conclusion, I'm happy to share my life with my new wife who has been with me through some difficult times including giving me some moral support in my divorce. My new wife is the woman to whom I love fiercely forever and a day. Even at the times when she is driving me crazy, I simply remain chaotically amused, and I simply ignore her as do most men with their wifes in successful marriages. Ditto the same for her. Never-the-less, we'll always love each other fiercely.
