Calvin's Story

Grants Pass Schools: Washington, Linclon, Riverside School. Best friend was always my brother Harold (we went to all 12 grades together). Boy Scout Troop members and later De Moley members were generally who I ran with when I wasn't working or doing Ticket Squad things. Jr. High was a fantastic experience. It was really cool to have many teachers. Mr. Sutton was the most memorable teacher. Got hooked on Astronomy and still have it as a hobby. High School was a blur for some reason. I weighed 105 lbs and 80 lbs was freckles and ears. My brother Arthur was president of Ticket Squad and I joined as a freshman and was president for three years. Girls that I dated (would like to have done more but I was usually working): Patty Read, Nancy Owenby, Linda Banducci, Yvonne Smith. Patty was probably the most serious romance. Worked after school for Courier from 3rd grade until graduation (ended up in circulation dept.). Loved to skate and dance (Rogue River) on weekends. Colleges: 1973 AA/AS Anth/Psyh; 1975 BA Psych; 1977 MA Psych; 78 MS Ed; 1985 Ph.D. Psych, minor ME. Eng. classes Portland State 1964. Military: Navy Reserves 1960-61; Navy Active 1961-1980, retired as an AWCS. Ships: Tingey (DD 539); Strauss (DDG-16) Commissioning Crew; Kearsarge (CVS 33); Kitty Hawk (CV 63). Assignments: VS - 41; and, Navy Personnel Research and Development Center. Squadrons: VS-21, VP-4, and, VS-37. Three Viet Nam tours. Mostly just one big memory blur. Lived in Dam Neck, VA, Philidelphia, Burlington, VT, Portland, OR, S. Calif, Hawaii, Millington, TN, Butler, PA, El Paso, TX and various overseas assignments. Wouldn't mind living in Grants Pass (down river)part-time. Current "professions" in retirement include charity work. Currently helping develop accessible housing and health care for those underserved in Texas. Spent three months in the new nation of Curacao acting as founding Executive Dean for St. Martinus University, School of Medicine. Guided the set-up of the facility, curriculum, enrollment of the first classes and did general "dean" stuff. Fun place for a few months but a bit too disorganized (the country) for a permanent residence. Previously served as Chair for the Board of Governors for Spartan Health Sciences University in St. Lucis (14 years helping this medical school modernize and become compliant with USA and foriegn requirements for accreditation). I always wanted to be a medical doctor when I grew up; the problem is that I still haven't grown up thus had to settle for a Ph.D.. I attempted to go to medical school when I was on active duty in the Navy but they informed me that I was TOO OLD (I was 35 years old at the time). I discovered golf in 2007 and have already worn out one golf cart and two instructors. I normally keep score by the number of balls tha...Expand for more
t I lose per hole. My heros as a teen were without question Charles Darwin and Benjamin Franklin. I read all I could find about their lives. Good dudes. I always saw Chris Columbus as a genius: he left Santa Maria, Spain and had zero idea where he was going; got to Hispanola and had no idea where he was; got back to Spain and had no idea where he had been and got a woman to pay for the whole thing!!!! Brilliant....... just kidding. If I won $100 million, I'd give equal shares of it to each of my kids, ensure grandkids had school money, give a large amount to charities that elevate the disenfrachised, put 1/2 into MSA, Inc. (I am founder), then take a full year of travel to completely out-of-the-way places. My current age is 69 years old. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be long dead. This was based on seeing most of my male relatives die prior to age 60. I was so completely wrong and now see 68 as the new 48. When I looked around at our 50th Class Reunion at all of the true achievers, I found that most are still producing and making the world a better place each day. I can honestly say that I feel a very strong spiritual connection with all of the kids in our classl but still don't like a few. My best friend would tell you I'm driven and stressed, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as driven and stressed. My goal is to become retired, free of all business ventures (still have a couple of rentals that are a pain in the "you-know-what"). Totally informal dresser. Most comfy in shorts, old shirt and berkies. I own three tux and generally wear them grudgingly for business purposes or when invited to one of the kids ceremonies. Am a member of Black Tie and Boots (Texas thing), so have to dress up for their occassions and at the dance they have for the new presidents. I have attended several but must say that Obama's was the best. I didn't (and won't) vote for him but loved the Ball. In 5 years, I hope to be really retired. I'm going to get there by some miracle. My first job was selling papers at age 7 or 8 and I had the Byrd's Market (6th and L) corner for many years. I believe we got 2 cents of the nickle the paper cost. I broke the single day, week, month and yearly records for the Courier by selling papers over 200 papers in a single day. I made $10-$15 in a good week. After working my way up into the circulation department, most people predicted that I would stay in the NEWS business. To relax, I take "down" days and sit around in my PJs, play golf, bird hunt and/or go to my semi-primative Mt. Cabin/Mobile in Timberon,NM. It is a gorgeous area in S. New Mexico that is around 7,900 feet and had dense pine forests, Aspens and tons of critters. Nearest neighbor can't hear me holler from the back porch.
