Calvin's Story

Chuck Schelberg’s professional bio Email: ChuckSchelberg at GMail dot com Chuck Schelberg is an industrial controls architect and programmer. He has been deeply involved with the concept, design, and implementation of a wide variety of industrial systems ranging from embedded motion controls, to parallel processor database systems, to communications gateways, to laboratory and medical equipment. He was a member of the Dick Morley team that developed the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) at Modicon. The PLC was the first computer accepted on the manufacturing floor. Every automated process used in manufacturing today uses PLCs. The PLC is the most prolific computer system to date. Of all the microprocessors made today the overwhelming majority become PLCs with the remainder going into cars, phones, tablets, and personal computers. Besides developing all of the original Modicon PLC software Mr. Schelberg was instrumental in developing all of the early Modicon advanced programming language functions (DX line) along with many of the PLC peripherals. Not a fan of the “Go To” statement Mr. Schelberg successfully developed the “Go From” method of programming which is the basis for the PLCs ladder logic. Mr. Schelberg was part of the team that developed the soft drum sequencer used in the first model of the SunKeeper building controller. That effort became today’s Andover Controls the world’s leading “Smart Building” management system manufacturer. Mr. Schelberg has successfully brought the science of chaos to bear in solving two classical process problems. One within a General Motors paint shop to minimize the number of color changes within the ten paint booths saving GM over $10K per paint booth per month. The second being the scheduling of autonomous pick and place robots to increase the throughput of critical object placements on an automated laboratory bench by 25%. Other contributions of Mr. Schelberg’s to the process automation field include ...Expand for more
an automated process to transform mechanical drawing files to Computer Numerical Control (CNC) files. This solution started the personal CNC tape preparation market for small NC shops. Mr. Schelberg is the holder of a Canadian and 7 US patents. The original Modicon 084 (Serial Number 1) is on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. On a more personal note. I married Adrienne Lamers, from Teaneck, in ’64 and we had Eric in ‘66 and Laura in ‘68 who have given us three grandchildren, Nick in ’99, Julia in ’05 and Thomas in ‘06. We moved to Massachusetts in ’67 and then moved to Milford, New Hampshire in ’73 and that is where Adrienne and I are today and will probably stay. As far as my career is concerned, in ‘64 I graduated from a technical school in Manhattan (RCA Institute) and in ’67 I connected with a group of misfit engineers headed by Dick Morley (Bedford Associates in Bedford, Mass). We offered our services to solve the perplexing problems faced in the industrial arena. Bedford Associates was an incubator for many companies whereby we did very well. One of those companies is Modicon (’68) which is still today the industry leader in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and is part of Schneider Electric. Even today there are more PLC’s made than smartphones. Other honorable mentions are: PowerOasis (’95), Andover Controls (’70), Machine Control Corporation (’67), Encode Technology (’77), Termiflex (’73), REM Inc. (‘14) and many more I have been very lucky and a lot of that is due to my friend and mentor Dick Morley the father of the PLC. I am proud to say that the US Patent Office has granted many of my patents and that the Modicon model 084 PLC serial number one is in the Smithsonian.
