Candace's Story

Life I left Flint right after graduation in 69 and got a Bachelor's at CMU in Mt. Pleasant. I sang in a band (and made good money) to put myself through college. Then a year in Kazoo at W. Mich. for my first Master's degree in teaching. Having passed on an offer for a lead role in an off-Broadway production of My Fair Lady, I took a job teaching in a tiny village on the west coast of Alaska, way out in the 'bush' and made twice the money I would have made had I stayed in Michigan. Two years out there was enough! I accepted a job in Anchorage, and have been here ever since. After a couple high schools, I've been teaching special ed. kids in a youth prison since 1986, and now am set to retire at the end of this school year, in June 08. I sometimes wonder what 'might have been' had I gone to the Big Apple, but I can't help thinking that I probably missed out on more trouble than good. While acting in local plays, I met my husband Dan in late 1990, and we were married the following summer. A superlative actor and wonderful singer in his own right, he tried teaching for awhile, but it just wasn't for him, so he took a job working for the city driving a garbage truck and just loves it. He's quite a few years younger than me and he's a REAL stud! In fact, these past 16 years have been the happiest years of my life! We bought a nice big house and for three years, ran a bed and breakfast here in the summers, just to pay off the mortgage. It was wor...Expand for more
th it. We are looking at buying another house for off-season travel. We travel now and then, having been to New Zealand, Canada a couple times, and to Thailand, and seem to love every place we go. Now we are considering moving to Nova Scotia after I retire. Dan has always been a motorcycle rider, and has a Gold Wing which we rode up from Michigan a few years ago. Catching the bug myself, I bought a Honda Shadow cruiser and learned to ride, so now I can go on my own if I want. Kids never happened for us, so we have dogs and a bird instead. They keep us busy enough! The bird talks like crazy sometimes and the dogs must think she is another person, who happens to have the gift of flight. With retirement looming on the horizon, my thoughts turn to filling those daytime hours formerly spent working. Chances are that I will take another job within a year or two, because I just can't sit still. For now though, I have plenty to do with quilting, knitting and gardening. When (and if...) we move to Nova Scotia, Dan will be busy building our house, or renovating an old one to modern standards. He has done so much on this house since we moved in, it is like a new place! When he's not at work, he's either working on the house and yard, volunteering to teach reading to immigrants, training for a ski or bicycle race, writing poetry or working on his art. He is so talented, creative and energetic. Sometimes I feel like the luckiest girl in the world!
