Caren's Story

Hello Class of '75. I was not very involved with High School socially, but would love to see a few old friends and know how they are, like Martha Tonkin and Bernard DeLeon, Shirley Chung, Anne Russell, Toine Sarragosa and several others. I dated Mark Wedlake all through High School, who was 3 years ahead of our class, in a band with older friends and I was always with him, until half way through our Senior year when we broke up. I began playing beach volleyball at Lover's Point every day and fell in love with a guy 12 years my senior and we lived together for a year. Most of that time was in Atascadero (near San Luis Obispo). When we split, I moved back to Pacific Grove and started working at Tillie Gort's Restaurant (Fall of 1976). I got together with a man named Russell, who became my husband and business partner. We started a company called Sweet Earth Natural Foods in 1978, inside the Granary (Health Food Store). We had 3 wonderful kids together, Aaron, Mike and Alissa who are the closest people in the world to me. I adore each of them and am so enjoying them as young adults! Things stayed the same for many years, running a company and raising kids. We couldn't get away from the business for long, so almost every summer vacation was spent camping in Big Sur which made for great family memories. In 2005 Russell and I split up and stayed friends and continued to run the business together. In 2008 we decided to put the business on the market so we could each go our own ways. ked at the business, made us a full price offer! During escrow though, the buyer was offered a position with a large Corporation that was too good to turn down so he asked if I'd be willing to be a business partner with him, stay with the company, keep some ownership and run the business. That began in September of '08. The economy did what we all witnessed it do since then and we are holding our own, but it's a lot on my plate! We have 15 employees, over 70 products, about 150 accounts and three distributors. Our products are sold primarily to Health Food Stores throughout Northern California with the majority of sales being from Santa Cruz to San Francisco. I like to spend my free time in nature and travel a little when I can. Some of my favorite pastimes are; getting together with friends, dancing to live music, watching good movies, visiting retreat places like Esalen, Tassajara or Mt Madonna, hiking in Big Sur, Carmel Valley or Yosemite when I can. I'm interested in starting an Organic, Educational, Healing Ranch Retreat and I'm working on that vision currently with some other friends/investors. Update!! I found and purchased (along with a land partner) a 15 acre property and home in the Prunedale/Elkhorn area. I just moved in last weekend (May 15,2010). It is the beginning of a long held dream of Community Gardens and Honey Bees, Goats and Chickens! So much to do, but my heart is happy to be out in the rolling hills and countryside! well, lots of love and best wishes for everyone. Caren
