Carl (Hobie)'s Story

Life Existentialism at its best, eh? What's there to say? I'm struggling to grow up and be a responsible member of society. My life is basically about working hard and playing hard. I believe that is the ticket to happiness. So, I try to combine the two. =) I travel a lot for work, so I try to play in new cities when I get the chance. I've no kids, yet, but I did get married in June, 2006. Who knew you could find someone that you could have so much fun with and still not get into trouble for it? My wife makes me laugh until my sides hurt. I have a saying for her: "You must be left, 'cause you sure as hell ain't right!" Aside from that, just enjoy working on my VW, riding my motorcycle, boating with friends. Love a good martini and a Macanudo. Feels like I'm writing a personals ad. Seriously, all is well on the Western (Florida) front! Probably no one interested in that anyway. Feel free to drop me a line. I'll chat with anyone. Sorry I missed the 10 year reunion, maybe I can make the 15 year. I was travelling, much as I wanted to be there I need to get paid first! Take it easy and be safe out there. School School! Ah, sweet torment of teenage life. Not real sure what to say here. I spent my time stuck between trying to get good grades and trying fit in. Was an awkward time, but I suppose it was for everyone whether they admit it or not. I guess we'd all say if we could go back, we would. I wouldn't change anything tho. I feel like I had the best of it all - just walking the fine line on fronts. Lots of fun back then with "The Boys" - yous know who you are! Wonder where those guys went? Always said we'd stick together. Who knows, if not for Andrew maybe lots of things would be different. I don't reflect much on my time in HS, so I guess I can't recall many funny stories of my times there. At least none that I feel aren't incriminating! We had some great teachers: Ms. Coe let us get away with anything. Ms. Heller's class was a trip for sure. I remember once me and Louis Larson stole a pad of passes when Ms. Heller was out for like 6 months. We forged the sub's name on the pass and would skip classes. Once we skipped some class to go screw around on the computer up in Ms. Heller's class and her sub asked if we had a pass. What an idiot. I gave her the hall pass with HER forged name on it. LMAO! I got 10 days work detail for that one. Me and Louis had a good laugh at how dumb I was to cough up that pass. Good times racing cars up to Kendall, skipping school to play volleyball on the beach, jumping the ramp up at the mall with our cars. We almost hit a lady once jumping in Doug C's Toyota van. What did we think of ourselves back then? I wouldn't change any of it, all the people I met, the ones I didn't get along with, the folks over at S. Dade Senior that I hung with for a while. I miss all that sometimes, but even though I've had the chance to visit Miami quite a bit in recent years on business, I can't say that I miss living there at all. College Hmmm... I did my time up at USF in Tampa. Went on a full-ride and screwed it up by joining EX fraternity. Got kicked out of school on academic suspension twice, then left altogether to pursue a career in real estate. Spent some time at a local community college to pick up some credit hours but still haven't gotten a degree. I spent my time in school partying and taking classes that had nothing to do with my major. I'd open up the catalog and go "Hmm... astronomy sounds cool, CHECK. Criminal justice sounds cool, CHECK". By the time I got kicked out, my counselor said I had nothing but electives. I still haven't taken freshman english 2 and I have like 100 credit hours on the books or something. Oh well, this hasn't burdened my career in the least. I suppose at some point I'll need that paper, but for now I'm fine without it. I guess I could tell a bunch of frat stories, but I've forgotten so many just because we spent so much time drunk. I sometimes regret it, but then again I'm making more than alot of college grads that I know and I started making it a ...Expand for more
lot sooner and without student loans......... sooooooo......... someday I'll finish. Workplace During HS I worked for a UM/MDCC biology professor and we did some environmental work. So, in college I contacted someone I we had done some business with and I got a job in an environmental analysis laboratory. Pretty dirty work. Met a guy there whose wife worked in a title insurance company and they had a job opening there, so I went an interviewed and got a pretty decent part time job while going to college. About 6 months into it I started seeing what kind of money people were making and I knew I could do what they did, so I applied for a job in Sarasota with one of our subsidiaries. I was hungry and motivated and I got the job. Within 6 weeks I had been promoted from an entry level position to a CSR position. 6 weeks later I took a skilled position at a competitor for double my salary. A year after that I left the company to start my own agency with our sales rep and a couple of closers. I did that for a year, then I sold my stake in the company and took some time off. I got my mortgage broker's license and moved to Orlando where I started a company and originated some loans. That was a pretty sweet job. Tons of cash, set your own hours. But, sales wasn't my thing. I hired a guy over there to do some cold-calling for me and he showed me some old record albums he'd made in the late 80's up in New York. When he learned that I had written lots of poetry in my life, he suggested that we should write a song together. I had no clue about music, but I went ahead and co-wrote a song with this guy. We recorded it in a studio on the E. Coast of Florida. The sound engineer, a well known underground breakbeat DJ, wanted to work on a remix of our JAZZ song and he worked it into a trance song. Apparently when he was working on it, a guy from Phat Cat records heard it and wanted to buy it. So, cinderella story, right? 6 months later the song hit the Florida airwaves and clubs and BLEW UP. We sold 1 million records in the US and 750k in Europe. The song was a huge hit and I lived "the life" for about 8 months, you know limos everywhere, got invited to the CityWalk opening in Orlando, brushed shoulders with Mariah, Bobby, Whitney, Britney (her original band, Innosense, rented the apartment next to mine). Was a blast for sure. The money dries up eventually tho and I had no inclination to do it all over again. Was fun while it lasted. I still have an unreleased 2nd single follow up sitting here pressed up in about 100 copies. Haven't done anything with it. The recording business is corrupt and I hate dealing with ClearChannel - so much for that! I did start my own small indie label and had a couple of local artists signed, but aside from losing a boatload of money on artist development, nothing really came of it. Anyway, after that I came back to Tampa to do real estate. Worked for a lawyer for a couple of years till I got RIF'd, moonlighted as a realtor and loan officer and then landed a job with a national title company as a supervisor. Did that for 2 years and moved to a competitor for a state level middle management position at double my salary. Got RIF'd there in 2/05 and went back to the previous company where I am on a state/regional management level as a project supervisor for a new division initiative. The money's good, I get to travel, I have a good future. I'd say I'm pretty far from owning the Ferrari and the house in Aspen, but I can get there someday. I'm happy doing my 40-60 hours a week and coming home to relax and enjoy my income. Military WOW.. I wish I could say something here. I was supposed to fly jets until my eyesight went to crap. Sometimes wish I would've enlisted, but pops would have freaked. Oh well, I've got tons of respect for my boys in the service. You guys are keeping it real and bringing it home. Love and prayers to you and your families. We all love yas and we all want yas home with us! Thanks for keeping the dream of American freedom alive in the world - it may not be perfect but it is the best the world has known.
