R. Carl's Story

Life Currently, I teach geology and geophysics at San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas. It's cake compared to the other tough jobs I've had through the years... After high school, I worked in Bishop, CA. for Aegis Ambulance and Symons Emergency Specialties as an Ambulance Driver/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). This line of work brought me into contact with some dreadful sights, but my coworkers remain among the most honorable people I've ever known. The lessons I learned from them have proved invaluable to this day. Being an EMT was the best job I ever had, but I was also curious about the military. In 1990, I joined the U.S. Navy (active duty) and was attached to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. John F. Kennedy where I served in a helicopter squadron (HS-7) in both the Persian Gulf War, and later, the Balkans conflict. In 1994, I left the Navy having earned an honorable discharge and was more than ready for college. I went back to work as an ambulance driver, this time for St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI, and began working towards a BS in Geology and Geophysics at the University there. ...Expand for more
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I got married in 1992, but the marriage ended in 1998. You may know from your own experience that getting divorced while pursuing a degree can put a cramp on one'’s academic progress. It did so on mine because it took me four more years to finish! Nonetheless, in 2003 I graduated with honors, and even won a coveted 7-month internship with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Idaho National Lab in Idaho Falls. By the end of 2003, my internship was over and I began graduate school at Auburn University in Alabama. There, I completed a research project and Master of Science degree on an 83-million-year-old meteorite impact crater near the city of Wetumpka, Alabama. It's called the "“Wetumpka Crater,"” but weathering & erosion have taken their toll, so there's not much left to look at unless you are a scientist. Finally, in 2005, I married a beautiful petrophysicist whom I had met way back in 2002 while we were both students at the University of Wisconsin. We currently live near Houston, TX. and bought a home there in 2007. No kids yet... maybe someday when I get old.
