Carl's Story

Life Gosh, it's only been 38 years since graduation in 1966. It should be easy to sum that up in 4000 characters. After a turbulent and disconcerting freshman year at Yale, I returned to Seattle and spent the next nine years working my way through the University of Washington, paying my way by working a variety of jobs ranging from soda jerk (no comments, please) to tow truck dispatcher. In my spare time, I wrote bad poetry, protested the Viet Nam war, got married, got divorced, and finally graduated with a degree in English Composition. After graduating, I got a temporary position with the Bureau of the Census as a field agent for the Census of Governments. This allowed me to travel the eastern states from Florida to Michigan in my car, staying in motels, compiling financial statistics on local govenments. After this I took a job as a claims adjuster for Safeco. This lasted for a year before I came to the conclusion that I did not have the ability to deal daily with rampant greed and human suffering. Subsequently I worked as a dishwasher and prep cook for a restaurant. As the manager of my rooming house said, "Good, honest work." After a six month stint as a temporary worker in Milwaukee, I returned to Seattle and took a postion with AAA (the auto club), rising to the stratospheric height of Lead Manager of ...Expand for more
branch offices. I used the technique of being the kind of boss I would want to work for. One who listens, is willing to try new ideas, builds a team, and cares about the success and well-being of his employees. I got married and bought a house in suburbia during this period. I left that position in 1988 to become a commercial landscaper. I rose to the ionospheric height of foreman, completing jobs at Microsoft, Carillon Point, and Boeing. In 1994 I took a month-long trip to Mexico to visit the migrant workers who largely made up my landscape crew in the tiny village of La Presa de Chiquimitio outside of Morelia. When I returned, I got divorced, moved to Denver, and enrolled in a computer programming course at Metro State. In 1995 my mother died and in 1996 I moved back to Seattle to care for my father and take a job as a programmer at an insurance company. In 2002, my father died. In 2003 I was laid off from my programming job although I still get income from them by doing work as an independent contractor. I live in a nice home in Edmonds with my domestic partner and her daughter. In my spare time I write bad poetry and protest the addlepated policies of George Bush and his merry band of Neocons. I'm pretty sure I left something out but, it probably isn't any of your business anyway. Take care. Peace.
