Carlie's Story
Hazards Consultant * Business Owner * Model * Writer * Sometimes Musician * Luckiest Girl in the World
When I was little, my Mama told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. She did not specify I had to pick just one thing. *grins* So, I didn't.
At WHS I was the outlandish girl who sang in chorus, edited the literary journal, played Madonna and Cyndi Lauper in lip sync contests and was a founding member of the modeling club. I took acting, voice, and modeling classes on the weekends my junior year and signed with a modeling agency my senior year. I actually left a few credits shy of a diploma in '87 and modeled throughout the U.S. with a fun stint in Chicago. In 1989, I moved to Oklahoma and decided to finish up the last few h.s. credits and go to college. At NW Classen HS, I was the outlandish, hard-working girl who juggled mall jobs and one in HS office with modeling and schoolwork. I sang in the chorus, loved dance class, writing for the school literary magazine, and lived for the state fair. I was honored to speak at graduation and lucked out to get a dorm room at University of OK right across the hall from my friend and classmate Terry Spin...Expand for more
ks (also a model, lol). I took a few years off of the modeling gig to focus on studies and acting. ( I had a blast as a member of the Renegade Shakespeare Company.) I spent most of my electives studying guitar and music composition with Dr. Larry Hammett and worked writing for the school newspaper and a couple of state and regional magazines, splitting my time between the A&E and politics beats. I earned a couple of BAs - one in journalism, one in film & video studies and then earned a Master's in regional and city planning with an emphasis on environmental and natural hazards planning. After graduation, I worked for OU for a few years to gain some research experience and went back to modeling. In 2005, I left OU and opened a consulting firm, Natural Hazards Consulting. Today, I am happy to say NHC is trucking along and I stay busy authoring educational articles and products on environmental and natural hazards. I am signed with a different modeling agency now than I started out with but, still working as a commercial model. Although I mostly write non-fiction, I have had a few poems published and I continue to play and write music, though mostly for myself.
