Carla's Story
Well, I was born and raised in Portsmouth till we moved to Columbus, Oh in 1968 right before I was to go to PHS. But I came down home every chance I got and hung out with friends I grew up with. I went to every dance I could get to CAY, YMCA, Armory, occasional Steel Workers Hall. But I loved to dance. Of course, went to Swimland as much as possible. Walked all over Portsmouth till I got my drivers license. If I'd had a relative I could have lived with to have stayed in Portsmouth to graduate at PHS I would have. Columbus was too big, you needed a car to get around and no community dances like in Portsmouth. In other words I hated it. People were not as friendly and I was not that forward of a person getting to know people back then.
Went to Scudder Elementary till 6 th grade. Then went to Grant Junior High 7th thru 9th. I had a lot of friends from all areas of Portsmouth growing up. I played the clarinet from 5th grade till 9th grade in Portsmouth. Some of my friends growing...Expand for more
up were Linda Spradlin, Lenora Shaw, Debbie Price, Debbie Leightenheimer, Mark Brown, Willie Ratliff, Becky Kuhn, Steve Nibert, Sam Pebbles, Danny Shortridge, Becky, Bobby, and Bruce Brewer, Jerry Gammon, Ronnie Stevenson, Kelly O'Leary, Cynthia Hamilton, Henrietta White, Dave Austin, and the list goes on and on.
I was very fortunate to have been invited to the class reunions for the class of 1971. Whether I graduated from PHS or not my friends I grew up with ask me to come. I enjoyed myself so much I think I attended 2 or 3. My health has kind of kept me from attending. But if there is any coming up I hope to get notice cause I really want to try my hardest to come.
Portsmouth will always be my hometown and I always tell people I am proud to be from Portsmouth. And I tell them Portsmouth may have changed but there is a lot of good people still living there. And not to pass judgement on what the bad people have done. I tell them you have good and bad no matter where you live.
